Can You Really Improve 9 Or More Strokes On The Golf Course? Yes You Can!!!

"Can You Really Improve 9 Or More Strokes On The Golf Course?"

If You Have A PLAN -- Yes You Can!!

The Golfer’s age old question is “what is the simplest, most effective way for me to improve my golf scores." It’s a brilliant question – so I’m going to give you a brilliant answer!

Let's start by talking about last week’s Nationwide Tour Event in Idaho – Hunter Haas won by scoring an impressive 4 round score of 21 under par. These 4 rounds included a 2nd round 64. So, I’d like to focus on his 64 as it could help you to understand how you could also start to improve your scores.

So to start out, I will bore you with a few stats so that you can see how impressive this score is, however I then want to help you to relate this to your golf game so that you can make your own PLAN for what you need to work on in your golf game.

To shoot the 64: Average Driver – 334 yards; Fairways Hit – 10; Greens – 11; Putts – 23

Now, for most Golfers, the goal isn’t to score 64 for 18 holes. It may be to break 100, 90 or 80 – with some single digit Golfers wanting to shoot par. So hitting a golf ball 334 yards … isn’t necessary.

However, since most of our articles discuss your golf swing – let’s talk about something a little different this week. Let’s focus on the 23 putts. As amazing as it is to hit the golf ball 334 yards – the average Golfer has almost as much chance of having 23 putts for 18 holes as they do of hitting the golf ball 334 yards!

And for the Golfer that doesn’t believe me - 23 putts equals 13 – 1 putts and 5 – 2 putts … yes, 13 – 1 putts! Or to put it in an even more direct way -- when’s the last time that you had 6 – 1 putts? 13 – 1 putts might not be as awe inspiring as standing there and watching someone hit the golf ball 334 yards – however, it is just as skillful.

And although GMS believes that the first place to improve your golf score is to first improve your Driver – which is counter to the old myth of having to first improve your short game for better scores - let’s talk about how improving your putting just a little bit has the "potential" for producing better results.

On the surface – if you improved your putting – you should improve your scores. But we’re dealing with reality. And in reality – improved putting doesn’t always translate into better scores. Because if you’re inconsistent with your Driver on most holes and often taking penalties and punching out of the trees – who cares how well you putt. By the time you get to the back 9 holes – you’re so tired and frustrated from playing out of the trees … golf isn’t fun anymore by the time you get to the green. So regardless of how much better your putting stroke is – “who cares if I two putt? It’ll just be another double bogey because I can’t keep my Driver in play!”

However, I want to speak about these 23 putts because there are Golfers that average twice as many putts per round. I’m not saying that there are millions of Golfers that do so – although 46 putts would be equivalent to a Golfer having 8 holes where they 2 putt and 10 holes where they 3 putt. And to say that that doesn’t happen often is to say that Tiger didn’t … well never mind, I’ll keep my mouth shut.

Now, for the Golfer that says “I’m a pretty good putter. I hardly ever 3 putt.” I would say that this qualifies that Golfer as usually having between 38 and 41 putts. In my mind and my experience with Golfers, the phrase ‘hardly ever” means that they 3 putt between 2 to 5 times every 18 holes. And whenever I have heard that comment – and I have heard it more times than I can count – I have found that this Golfer’s average score is usually between 93 and 105.

So let’s do some mathematics for this 93 to 105 Golfer. Yet, because of the space available for me to write, I have to limit this example to only this scoring range. But if you’re in another scoring range – I’m sure you can make the necessary adjustments to personalize this information.

If the Golfer’s average score is 97 and that Golfer has 39 putts per round (15 – 2 putts and 3 – 3 putts) – that would mean that if they somehow brought their putts down to 23 for one magical round of golf … then they would end up with a score of 81.

Wait, is that correct. Let me check my math. 39 putts minus 23 putts is 16 strokes less. And if the Golfer was averaging a score of 97 – and we took those 16 surplus putts of their score – that would mean an 81. Hmmmm, that gets me thinking. Does that get you thinking?

It gets me thinking that although you might never have 23 putts for 18 holes, if you we able to improve from 39 putts to a more reasonable 30 putts – that would mean that you have now scored 88. 97 minus 9 less putts equals 88!

And yes, I still believe my statement above about having to also improve your Driver so that you can become more accurate and gain distance. And yes, it is of extreme importance for you to have a PLAN for the golf course so that you can go around the 18 holes playing to your Strengths and away from your Weaknesses. However, there is potential for many Golfers to improve 9 strokes by going from 39 putts to 30 putts.

Now let’s talk about your Driver -

Most of the time you play golf – you’ll have 14 Drives per 18 holes. And staying in that 93 to 105 scoring level – we have found that most of these Golfers lose 2 to 4 Golf balls per round (into the trees or water) with their tee shots. And, in addition, these same Golfers also put themselves in bad positions behind trees and bushes where they have to “waste” a shot another 2 to 4 times per round.

So to make it easy – let’s say this Golfer loses 3 golf balls and has to “waste” 3 golf shots punching out. That would be a fair number …. wouldn’t you agree? 8 pretty good drives and 6 bad drives?

Now, let’s say you can improve just half of those 6 bad drives – so that now you only have 3 bad drives. Would you be satisfied? Well, you should. Because if you did and you improved your putting like I spoke about above (39 putts to 30 putts) – you now have improved from a Golfer that frequently scores 97 to a Golfer that frequently scores 85!

Now, get this: only improving your Driver won’t help your scores much. And only improving your putter won’t help you much. But improving both at the same time can produce incredible results! For example: the improvement you see in your Driver has you feeling good about your game, plus the added distance you hit the golf ball allows easier, more accurate irons to the green. But you continually miss putts. What starts to happen as your round continues? The missed putts start to wear on you and it starts affecting your entire game.

But, if you improved both your Driver and your putting, now since you’re feeling good about your game while standing on the green, plus you’re an improved putter – this translates into better golf scores!

The key is that you need to know these stats to be able to work on improving them.

Do you have a PLAN for improvement? Or are you still Monkeying around?

The Monkey just keeps doing the ‘same old, same old’ and their scores continue to be the ‘same old, same old’

The Player has a PLAN

Go ahead, come to GMS and learn to become a Player

“I Broke 80 For The First Time!"

From High 90's And 100+ To 78!

Alex, I broke 80 for the first time. When I attended my GMS session I was continuously in the high nineties with an occasional 100+ thrown in.

In my 60s and playing the 6,300 yd tees, I shot a 78 at a local course. I told everyone I didn't want to know how well I was doing going into the last 9 holes. I was just determined to do my best. On the last hole, I stuck to my plan, laid back away from all the trouble, and made par. I actually made par on the last 4 holes).

“From 7.8 To A 4.3 Handicap!”

A 40% Improvement In Scores!

Dear Marc,

I attended the GMS program in La Quinta, California 6 months ago with your Instructor, Sam Burge. At that time I was a 7.8 index. I am now playing to a 4.3 index.

I would have to say that much of that improvement is related to the GMS-related instruction I received from Sam. Of particular benefit are the putting drills – as this area is where the game is won/lost at the level I am (pretty) consistently playing at.

Thanks and congratulations on your continuing success as a business and in creating value and better golf for your clients.

The Buzz with Alex

La Quinta + GMS = WOW!!

As we move out of September and into October, I need to ask this question: Is it possible that there is a better place to be in November than in La Quinta, California?

With the mornings starting out around 62 degrees (17 Celsius) and going up to the average High temperature of 80 degrees (27 Celsius) and most likely not a single cloud in the sky – it’s easy to understand why the Hollywood elite made Palm Springs/La Quinta their winter getaway.

In November, GMS opens our 4th season in The Desert and our 2nd season at the beautiful SilverRock Resort Golf Club. As the jokes goes around the GMS office when someone asks “how do you select your locations” – ‘We select locations based on where Marc likes to vacation/holiday.’

Thus, GMS opened our first location in La Quinta 4 years ago starting with the Trilogy Golf Club – which hosted the PGA Tour’s Skins Game 4 times. And although we loved Trilogy – when we had the opportunity to move our program to SilverRock … we couldn’t turn that offer down!

SilverRock hosts the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic each January!

We have fallen in love with SilverRock and according to the reviews we have received from our Golfers that attended GMS this past year in La Quinta – our Golfers feel the same way. And as you look at the photos I have included – I’m sure you can start to see why everyone loves our La Quinta location at SilverRock!

November in La Quinta? It may be something you might want to consider.

So, basically, if you're looking for GMS in Paradise - our La Quinta, California location is the best!

"How Are Your 200 Yard Golf Shots?"

How Are You Doing With Your 200 Yard Golf Shots?

How many times do you expect to hit your golf ball onto the green from over 200 yards away? Well, before you read anymore, please say your answer aloud so that you're committed to your answer throughout this article. It will come in handy as we go forward!

Now, before we talk about the number you selected according to the question above, let's see how the best in the world do from over 200 yards away. On the PGA Tour – they rank the top 180 Golfers for each statistical category – so to make this simple, I'm going to give you the stat for the 90th ranked PGA Tour Player as far as how far their golf ball ends away from the hole on shots from 200 to 225 yards away.

The number 90 Players – Jonathon Byrd, Hunter Mahan, Charlie Wi – each average 41 feet from the hole on a 200 to 225 yard shot. Which is basically 13.6 yards (or 12.5 meters) from the hole. To take this even deeper – a great Player like Rory Sabatini averages 49 feet away (16.3 yards or 15 meters).

So how does this apply to you?

Well it’s my guess that if you played Rory Sabatini on a golf course that plays over 7,200 yards, with the course set-up under Tour conditions … he would “squash you like a grape!” For an example – let’s use a Golfer that usually scores 90 on their home course from 6,400 yards. This Golfer would most likely struggle to score within 15 shots of their average with that extra 800 yards and the Tour Conditions (longer carries to the fairway, greens that are faster than you’ll ever play, rough that is longer than should be allowed, and pin locations that’ll make you cry). Yet, Rory will end up scoring around 71.

So as Rory will score about 34 shots better than the average 90 Golfer – I must ask – if he averages being 16.3 yards from the hole, what do you think a Golfer that scores 34 shots higher would average?

Additionally, while most Golfers are hitting a 3 wood or 5 wood or hybrid to a green 200 to 225 yards away – Rory is probably hitting his 5 or 6 iron. Which means that he will be incredibly more accurate to a green that is 200 to 225 yards away.

And if he averages having his golf ball end up 49 feet away from the flag using a 5 iron – we could say that most Golfers that score above 90 (and using a fairway wood or hybrid) will have their golf ball end up at least 7 yards farther away than Rory Sabatini. Which would mean that you would average over 70 feet (23 yards or 21 meters) from your target.

And you know what is usually 23 yards away from the hole in each direction? Trouble! Danger Zones! Place you do not want to be!

Now remember, the 23 yards is your average – which means that for every shot that you hit well and end up 7 yards away from the flag – you’re just as likely to hit another shot 39 yards (or 35.6 meters) from the flag. And if there is usually trouble 23 yards away – guess what there is 39 yards away. Major trouble!

Then considering that a former Masters winner like Mike Weir “only” gets his golf ball onto a green that is over 200 yards – just 3 times in 10 chances (he averages 31%) … what are the chances of a Golfer that hasn’t even won the “D Flight” division of their Club Championship have of getting their golf ball onto the green from that distance? Does he/her have a better chance of hitting the green than a guy that has won over $26,000,000 playing golf and whose average score is 71 playing on the PGA Tour?

Now, I’m not trying to be crude with the reference to “D Flight” – so please don’t take offence – I’m just being realistic! If Mike Weir is averaging hitting 3 greens out of 10 on shots longer than 200 yards …. what do you think you average? What was your answer at the beginning of this article? 4 or 5?

So what’s the point of this article? It’s not to say that you should avoid trying to hit these over 200 yard shots to the green. It’s to say that you need to start reading the golf course and making a PLAN based on your Strengths and Weaknesses. What this means is that if you have a 225 yard shot to the green – you need to look at and determine the “Pro’s and Con’s” of hitting your “225 yard club”.

Where is the trouble?

Is it short of the green, over the green, to the right, to the left … all of the above? You need to make that determination first – then you need to look at your game. If all the trouble is behind the green – go for it. The chances of you hitting over the green are minimal. However, if the trouble is short and your “225 yard club” means that you can keep the golf ball in the air for 195 yards and then get 30 yards of roll – you need to play another shot. Because if your ball lands 195 yards away – 195 yards might be where the trouble is.

If the trouble is on the left of the green and you normally have the tendency of hitting your bad shots to the right … then go for it. But if the trouble is on the right and you normally hit your bad shots to the right – you need to play another shot (ie – select another club).

The issue is that 7 out of every 8 Golfers that we observe don’t do that. They see that they have 225 yards … and they take out their 225 yard club. If Mike Weir is only hitting the green 3 times for every 10 shots – what are you thinking!

Yes, improving your golf swing should be a priority. And we work very hard with our Golfers to help them do so. However, how many shots do you have from over 200 yards during a typical round of golf? Now if Weir is missing the green 7 times out of every 10 shots – is it fair to say that you’re missing at least 8? The next question needs to be – where are those 8 shots ending up? And then, how many additional strokes are you racking up because those shots are ending in the trees, bunkers, deep rough and water? (And don’t forget about the 112 yard wormburners and 74 yard fat shots that can kill your spirit and confidence!)

Whereas, if the trouble was in the front of the green or to the right – you most likely would save a ton of strokes by reading the golf course, understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses and playing to your PLAN by selecting a club that would allow you to hit short of the trouble. Again, this isn’t to discourage you from hitting your “225 yard club” – this is to say that you need to know when to hit it and when to select another option. Or in other words – Do you have a PLAN? Or do you play like a Monkey?

The Monkey works exclusively on their golf swing, yet continually makes the same bad decisions on the golf course and then blames their bad golf swing for their high scores

The Player works on their golf swing, however they use that practice time to formulate a PLAN that they can use on the golf course to achieve better scores

Go ahead, Be a Player!

“God Bless GMS – God Bless The Stepping Drill!”

Marc,

I scored a 37 -- my lowest score ever at Mid-Valley!!!! My lowest nine holes anywhere since June 1, 2007!!

Every iron shot included the "GMS Stepping Drill", every shot! 14 putts, one birdie, three bogies, 4 GIRS. Can't tell you how good that felt.

God Bless GMS. God bless the Stepping Drill. God Bless Albert Einstein -- why? Because the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I told myself I needed to commit to the Stepping Drill – I did – and I played great!

The Buzz with Alex

When's The Last Time Someone Exceeded Your Expectations?

Exceeding Expectations – that's a phrase that is frequently discussed around the GMS office. How can we continually exceed our Golfers' expectations? The obvious answer is that we help our Golfers to improve their golf games. And I believe we're doing that. Yet, we still are trying to get better and better by continually offering training for our Instructors to improve their instructional and communication skills.

However, this week the phrase of Exceeding Expectations was brought to a new level as we heard a story about a company that tries to compete with GMS. That "golf school" has fallen on hard times as it went from having over 5,000 Golfers coming to see them (in one year) in the late 1990's to having 500 Golfers coming to see them last year. Now, we aren't happy with others suffering. However, we believe this goes back to Exceeding Expectations.

Obviously, that company didn't exceed expectations.

To pat ourselves on the back (you have to do that sometimes), GMS has worked so hard to Exceed Expectations that even though the world economy has struggled - GMS has grown. We rest that accomplishment solely on the success of our Golfers that have improved and have had their friends notice that improvement. Because the amount of referrals that we have received has been "off the charts".

Just think - if a company had 5,000 customers in one year and each customer referred just 1 person – that company would've had over 5,000 the next year (5,000 referrals, a percentage of returning Golfers, along with Golfers finding them through the companies marketing). However, they lost 90% of their business.

I really can't tell you how many Golfers we have had in 2010 that have called (or emailed) us saying that "My friend, xxxxx attended your program and loved it. And you can certainly see the difference in (his/her) game! Can you help me too?" At least 50% of our phone calls and emails have similar dialogue. And that tells me that we're doing something right. Which is nice to know.

But we still need to work harder, because we have set the bar high and we need to take it higher. So as we continually try to raise our service for you – we also know that we have some successful, smart people that read Golf Improvement Weekly each issue. So what are your thoughts? Do you have ideas that you would like to share with us on how to raise the bar even higher? I'd love to hear from you.

Do You Play Golf Like A Player?

What Would You Rather Do On The Golf Course?

Below are some questions that pertain to your golf game. By answering these questions we can find out what type of Golfer you are, what gets you motivated to play better and what aspect of your game you need to work on harder.

Now some of these questions are a little outlandish and will never happen on the golf course - but take these questions in stride and have FUN with them.

For example how would you answer if I asked you this question:

Would you rather hit your pitching wedge from 50 yards away to an island green surrounded by water that is:

Only 5 yards in depth (front to back) and 40 yards wide (left to right)

OR
To a green that is 40 yards in depth and only 5 yards wide?

Answer before reading any farther!

I believe most Golfers would take the first one - the 40 yard wide green. What should this tell you if you picked it? It tells you that you're too concerned with direction and not on how much more difficult it is to control your distance.

For example - there isn't a Player in the world that could land a golf ball and stop it on the green that is 5 yards in depth -- more than 3 times out of 10 shots. Imagine how many times you would land in the water short of the green or fly over a green that is only 5 yards in depth? And the times you did land on it - how many times would you have enough backspin on the golf ball to stop it from bouncing over the back edge? Or have too much backspin and spin it off the front of the green?

Try it yourself – set-up four poles (or cones) 50 yards away so that there is only 5 yards between the front poles and back poles. See how many you can land between the poles and stop between the poles.

However, on-the-other-hand, a Player could safely land on the 40 yard long (and 5 yard wide) green at least 7 out of 10 times (being off on direction only 3 times). Direction is important - though it's easier for every level of Golfer (from the Golfer averaging 72 to the Golfer averaging 120) to come closer in direction than it is to come closer in distance. Again, just think how many times you'd come short or over green if it was only 5 yards front to back.

So for your wedge shots on the golf course - are you more concerned with being too far to the left or too far to the right OR are you more concerned with being too short or too long. If you're like 7 out of 8 Monkeys, you're too concerned with direction!

The Player knows that if they have the proper distance control – they most likely will hit a solid shot (which also means their direction will be good enough). Whereas proper direction doesn’t guarantee proper distance control.

Here are more questions for you to answer (remember, some are outlandish, but your answer will tell us a lot about your golf game).  I have given what I believe are the better answers at the end of this article - so see how you do.

Would you rather:

Make your best, most perfect golf swing from 155 yards to the flag - watch as your perfectly struck golf shot goes directly towards the flag – yet the golf ball flies over the back of the green by 5 yards

OR
Hit a half topped, line drive, ugly looking shot from 155 yards that lands 35 yards short of the green, but continues to roll up onto the green and ends up 12 feet from the hole

Would you rather:

Hit 14 solid, perfect Drives that carry 275 yards down the fairway. Drives that your playing partners can't stop talking about. Each shot is so beautiful as you watch it soar through the air. Yet all 14 Drives take terrible bounces that knock each golf ball 40 yards to the right and into the trees. Which leaves you only one option of hitting straight back out to the fairway without advancing the ball 1 yard closer to the hole

OR
Hit 14 Drives that slice 15 yards and go about 190 yards, but each Drive stops on or close to the fairway -- leaving you with a perfect angle to the green

Would you rather:

Hit all 18 greens in regulation and 3 putt each hole for a Bogey
OR
Miss all 18 greens in regulation and hit one wedge shot and two putts to make Bogey on the first 17 holes, and then hit one wedge shot and one putt to make Par on the 18th hole

Would you rather:

Be known as an Excellent Ball Striker that can't break 90

OR
Be known as an Average Ball Striker that never scores higher than 89

Would you rather:

Play 18 holes today and 18 holes tomorrow and score 80 today (and be very happy) and 100 tomorrow (and be incredibly frustrated because you scored 20 strokes lower the day before)

OR
Score 90 both days

In a Scramble Tournament (some may call it Best Ball) - would you rather:

Be the Golfer in the group that gets chosen to hit their tee shot last in the group because you're "The Bomber" -- meaning once someone else in your group is safe in the fairway you can try to bomb the golf ball as far as you can

OR
Would you rather be the Golfer chosen to putt last in your group because you're known as the best putter and you could watch everybody putt so that you can read their putts and have a better idea of what the golf ball is going to do as it rolls towards the hole

Would you rather:

Be a Monkey

OR
Be a Player

The Monkey will pick the first answer in each question above because they're only looking for the Perfect Shot and nothing else is acceptable

The Player will pick the second answer in each question because they don't mind being called "Lucky" as they consistently have the lowest score

Go ahead, Be a Player!

"Welcome Back John Daly!"

Believe it or not – John Daly had a great tournament 2 weeks ago at the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in North Carolina as he came in a very respectable 41st place. It was his 2nd best finish of the year.

Of all the great things that can happen in the world of golf – John Daly getting his life and golf game back together is near the top in my book.

When John Daly is playing well, there might not be a more exciting Golfer to watch! And to go deeper into the correlation of how important Daly is – the game of Golf reached its pinnacle in popularity between 1992 and 1998 … which just so happens to corresponds to the height of Daly’s popularity following his “come-out-of-nowhere” victory at the 1991 PGA Championship as well as his 1995 British Open victory at St. Andrews.

So it would be nice to see John make a “comeback”.

And if there is a comeback – this resurgence in his career will have to start with a better short game. Because Daly ranks a lowly 167th in getting up and down for par from farther than 30 yards from the green. Or in other terms – Daly gets up and down only 21% (or once out of every five attempts) when he's greater than 30 yards off the green. Daly has only made 8 pars in 37 attempts.

Whereas the two leaders in this category (Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk) have had a similar number of attempts (38 and 35 respectively). However, Stricker is averaging an awesome 55% (21 times in 38 attempts) and Furyk is averaging 48% (17 out of 35 attempts). And if you don’t think the 13 strokes Daly has lost in comparison to Stricker mean a lot, well … just remember that every stroke counts!

What is your percentage from over 30 yards? Can you beat John’s 21%?

“From A 15 Handicap To A 9.5 Handicap!”
(And Now A Single Digit Player!)

Marc,

I just wanted to update my game since I spent my time with GMS in St. Augustine in February 2009. My handicap is now 9.5 (it was a 15 when I attended).

I have consistently increased my control and distance and I keep making incremental strides in my game. I am breaking 80 much more than ever in my golf career. My attitude has completely changed on the course.

Thanks for the great school that keeps on giving long after the time I spent in Florida.

“Best Round Ever - 13 Shots Better!”

Hayden,

We played with some friends today. Vicki had her best round ever – 101 (13 shots better than her previous best). 53 on the front and 48 on the back. She played great. She had multiple 200 yard drives this afternoon. And her game was great overall.

I shot an 83, which was solid. Felt like I played really strong. Putting much better. Feel like I’m getting better. I am just in love with my ball striking… I feel like I’m playing a lot better.

Anyway, wanted you to know we appreciate the time we got to spend with you. Recommended some friends today to GMS and I think they will go next spring. We’re enjoying golf and much of that is possible because of the practical things you taught us.

"A Mile High And Beautiful!"

What can you say about Denver, Colorado in September? There aren’t many places with better golf weather than the Mile High City as August turns to September.

The first 10 days of this September (2010) are being forecasted as being from 75 degree to 82 degrees (23 Celsius to 27 Celsius) each day with nary a cloud to be found. Now that’s perfect as far as I’m concerned.

If you haven’t heard of our Denver, Colorado location at Green Valley Ranch – you should take notice. GVR (as we often refer to the golf course in the office), is again hosting the Colorado Open Championships. So we’d like to applaud our golf course partners for again hosting this important event.

They don’t just give the state’s Open Championship to any golf course. GVR is a great golf course and a fantastic golf facility. Why fantastic? Well, besides the golf course – we love the practice facility! The practice facility was designed to be a practice facility – meaning many golf courses basically just have a driving range … GVR has a practice facility! It’s fantastic.

Denver, Colorado
Green Valley Ranch Golf

What we also love about this location is the convenience. If GMS ever had a facility that is perfect for the Golfer that wants to fly in on Thursday night – do the GMS Program on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – then fly back home Sunday night (or fly in Sunday and do Monday to Wednesday) – Denver is the place!

First - Denver International Airport has non-stop flights from everywhere.

Second – Our hotel, The Hyatt Place, is only 15 minutes away from the airport and offers a free shuttle to and from the airport.

Third – The Hyatt Place also offers free shuttle service to and from the golf course each day!

Fourth – Breakfast is complimentary at the hotel, lunch is with us at the golf course, dinner is at one of the restaurants within walking distance right outside the hotel … or better yet, take the free shuttle to Emil-Lene’s Sirloin House (a real Colorado steakhouse -- ohh, so good!)

So basically, if you have a busy schedule, and want to do the GMS Program because you know your golf game needs it … for the absolute simplest logistics of getting in and getting out - our Denver location is the best!

The GMS Golf Blog - Are You A Monkey On The Golf Course?

Are You A Monkey On The Golf Course?

Are you playing up to your potential on the golf course? Or are you still playing to the same level you were 3 years ago? A Player is constantly improving their game by using a "Results Based Approach" of having a PLAN to improve. A Monkey continues to stay frustrated with their golf game because they're continually listening to the advice of other Golfers that struggle. We refer to this as using a "Theories And Assumptions Based Approach".

Meaning you may have the assumption that if you read enough theories in the golf magazines or listen to the theories of other Golfers that may have more experience than you -- that you will improve. Unfortunately these Theories And Assumptions cause more frustration than driving on I-405 (in Los Angeles) during rush hour traffic!

Which approach do you use? A Results Based Approach or a Theories And Assumptions Based Approach? To see if you're closer to being a Player or closer to being a Monkey -- see if you represent any of the examples below.

Before you read each statement below, please repeat the phrase - "You're a Monkey if you":

..... go to warm-up at the driving range with just your Driver before playing. What are you thinking? Could you ever imagine Tiger or Annika warming up for a round of golf by just going out there and repeatedly beating their Driver?

..... go to warm-up at the driving range before playing and start off by hitting to a target more than 65-yards away. The number one factor to hitting the golf ball in the direction you want it to go is "Centerness Of Hit". If you start hitting to a target more than 65-yards away, you're not working on controlling your golf swing, you're just swinging and hoping to eventually make solid contact on the next swing. We call that "Hoping Golf". Golfers that "Hope" are Golfers that struggle. Players that prepare a PLAN for better golf are Golfers that smile!

You're a Monkey if you:

..... practice your Driver more than you practice your wedges. Sure the Driver is the most important club in golf to hit well if you want to have fun on the golf course. I totally agree with that statement. Though the fastest way to hit your Driver better is to practice your wedges. Why is that?

..... think you're a good putter because you can 2-putt every hole. If you're averaging 36-putts per round or more, you're a poor putter and you'll never break 90 on a consistent basis unless you're an excellent ball striker. To become a Player -- start to think about it this way- if you have 36 putts, you have to be able to get to all 18 greens in 53 shots or less, that's less than 3 shots a hole including all penalties. This might not be difficult for a Golfer that regularly plays in the low 80's, but it may be difficult for someone with an inconsistent Driver to accomplish consistently.

You're a Monkey if you:

..... have a $300 Driver and a $12 sand wedge.

..... get so charged up about reading the tips in the golf magazines that you can't wait to get to the driving range to practice 3 or 4 of them. Sometimes all at the same time. And you usually end your practice session by saying - "I think I'm getting worse!"

You're definitely a Monkey if you:

..... have a $300 Driver and the $30 "KMART Special" as your putter. I don't believe an explanation is needed here. Or in other words -- if you need an explanation of the above, then you probably ... well never mind, I'll probably write something I'll regret later.

You're a Monkey if you:

..... are always trying to "work" the ball - play fades and draws on just about every shot - yet, you don't break 80, 9 out of 10 times you play. Become consistent at one ball flight before you try to be consistent at two ball flights.

..... say to yourself or your playing partners - "This is the worst I have ever hit the golf ball." Why does this make you a Monkey? Because this is often announced after only playing 2 holes and these same Golfers say this just about every round they play. If every round you play is the worst you ever hit the ball .... well again, never mind, I'm going to stop right here before I say something that gets me in trouble. Though, do you know anybody that says that same statement often?

You're a Monkey if you:

..... say that the strongest part of your game is your short game, yet you don't break 80, 9 out of 10 times. The perfect example - I know a Player that shot 1-under par on a par 72 golf course while only hitting 1 Green in Regulation. And I've seen multiple Golfers hit more than 10 Fairways with their Driver in a round of golf and not break 90. If you want to score better than you're currently scoring, you need a better short game. Or maybe I should say it this way - If the strongest part of your game is your short game and you don't consistently break 90 - you probably have a really bad long game. Anybody with a really strong short game will break 90 everytime they play golf, regardless of how they hit the golf ball off the tee.

..... hit your first putt 10 feet past the hole, then leave your next putt 2 feet short of the hole and then complain that "these greens are so inconsistent!"

You're a Monkey if you:

..... once heard someone say that the only way you should play a shot around the green is to get the ball rolling as soon as possible and then you not only adopted this philosophy to your game, but refuse to try anything else. Luckily for Phil Mickelson, he must've skipped that class.

..... are trying to decide which would be better for you - A one axis golf swing or a two axis golf swing. Learn to control your golf club by controlling your "Length Of Swing" and "Pace Of Swing" and you'll hit the golf ball so much better that you'll start to feel bad for the other Golfers that talk about how they're working on a one axis or two axis swing.

And you'll always be a Monkey:

..... if you continue to do all the above things that have most likely contributed to frustration in your golf game. You can't blame yourself for learning these bad habits. These habits are what you had learned by observing what other Monkeys are doing and saying. It's only natural to think that this was the way that golf was played. That's why there are so many frustrated Golfers - Monkey See, Monkey Do!

However, you're a Player if you ..... say to yourself - "What would the Monkey do?" And then do the exact opposite

Go ahead, Be a Player!

It's Time To Get Over Your "Missing The Fairway Phobia"

Does the anxiety that's created by feeling you always need to be in the fairway ... get in the way of you making a good, consistent golf swing. It seems that many Golfers try to alter their golf swing just to be able to hit more fairways. I would advice you not to do it

As of last week, on the PGA Tour - the top 5 in Driving Accuracy were:

1.    Omar Uresti
2.    Joe Durant
3.    Brian Gay
4.    Tim Clark
5.    Craig Bowden

All 5 are hitting between 71% and 75% of the fairways. So the most accurate Driver of the golf ball in the world is hitting "only" 10 fairways per round.

While Hackers such as:

1.    Phil Mickelson
2.    Ernie Els
3.    JB Holmes
4.    Padraig Harrington
5.    Dustin Johnson

Are all ranked 126th or worse as far as Driving Accuracy. With the most accurate being Ernie Els, hitting "only" 61% or 8 fairways per round. While Mickelson is at 53% or 7 fairways per round.

And where Tim Clark and Joe Durant are the only ones of those top 5 Accuracy Leaders in the top 50 in scoring (at 22nd and 48th respectively). It's amazing that Hackers that don't hit fairways like Mickelson (7th in scoring), JB Holmes (4th in scoring), Padraig Harrington (17th), Dustin Johnson (40th) and Ernie Els (1st) are able to survive with their terrible ballstriking.

Get over your phobia of being off the fairway and your golf swing and golf scores will improve.

“A Hole In One And First Time Breaking 90!”
(16 Strokes Better In Less Than 10 Days)

Hey Jeff,

Just wanted to drop you a note on how my dad and my golf trip to the Greenbriar Resort went. Today we played on the "Old White Course", the same one they just played the PGA Tour Event on 2 weeks ago.

The 3rd hole was a 190 yard par 3 and I hit 4 iron. By the time we got up to the green, we realized it was a hole in one.

I know one hole doesn't make the golfer, so you will be happy to hear what I learned at GMS carried over to the rest of the round; I shot an 89. Having never come close to the 80's (usually scoring above 105), I can do nothing but thank you for all the help you and the GMS drills have provided me.

Thank you so much for everything,

“From a 6.2 to 2.4 In Just Two Months!”

Hayden,

Just a quick update on the Brown County Amateur Tournament. I was in the first flight (1.5 - 3.5 handicap index).

I played very well the first two days shooting 74 and 72 and was in first place. I did not play as well on Sunday and ended up shooting 79 for a 225 total. Just did not make as many putts.

This was the lowest score I have had in this tournament, so that is a positive. My handicap index is now down to 2.4. It was 6.2 when I came to GMS in June - so I have made a lot of progress and have continued to build off everything I have learned.

I have put in time practicing, but doing it the GMS way. Based on how I have been playing I have decided to play in the USGA Senior Amateur qualifying in September in Wisconsin. This will be a big challenge, but I now feel like I can compete at that level so I might as well go for it.

Again, I owe you a lot for helping me to improve. I can't tell you how much fun it is to play well on a consistent basis. Hope your summer is going well and let me know if you are coming to Green Bay.

"What About November And December?"

It's August and people are already thinking about November and December? You probably wouldn't believe how many emails and phone calls we have already received about dates for GMS in November and December!

The two leading locations as far as people signing up for the GMS Program? La Quinta, California and Sotogrande, Spain

La Quinta, California

SilverRock Resort

Sotogrande, Spain

Almenara Resort

Two pretty nice places to spend 3 days playing and improving your golf game.

In years past - the bulk of the inquires we received for November and December started to arrive towards the end of September and beginning of October. Last year, these inquires started to come in at the beginning of September. And consequently, last year we had to unfortunately turn Golfers away because many dates in November and December sold-out early.

With the rate of inquires we're now receiving in the middle of August ... I can only imagine many of these November and December dates will be sold-out even sooner this year.

Again, so far, the most popular locations for November and December are La Quinta and Spain. So if these are your desired locations -- you might want to start looking for dates.

For dates and information on our GMS locations – go to our GMS All Locations web page by clicking here or give me a call.
