Too Much Right Side In Your Golf Swing? Is Your Right Side Messing You Up?

Too Much Right Side In Your Golf Swing?

Is Your Right Side Messing You Up?

Often times we hear right handed Golfers say that they have a problem of using too much of their right side in their golf swing. Left-handed Golfers – just reverse everything I’m saying. I’m sure you’re used to doing that when reading about golf.

Well, I don’t want to disappoint anyone that has been hanging on to the “too much right side” excuse for years, however the issue most likely isn’t using too much of your right side. The issue really comes down to not using enough of your left side.

We have conducted studies of Golfers and have found that many have been told that they use too much right side in their golf swing. Unfortunately, using that type of thinking will further damage your golf swing because you’ll be limiting how much the talented side of your body can do.

The real culprit in an inconsistent golf swing is probably the weaker side of your body … your left side. We have found that most right-handers are significantly stronger and more coordinated with their right side vs. their left side. We have also found that because their left side moves slower than their right side – they have the feeling that their right side is doing too much or overtaking their left side.

On the contrary, the real issue is probably that your left side isn’t doing enough. So as your left side is slow to participate in the golf swing – it often gives the Golfer the feeling that their right side is doing too much.

Here’s an example to see how much more talented your right side might be compared to your left side: crumple up a piece of paper into a ball. Now, with your left hand, try to throw that paper as far across the room as you can. Now do it with your right hand.

Which hand threw it farther and which hand felt more coordinated with the rest of your body?

Here’s another: with your computer, move your mouse to the left side of your computer and try to use your mouse for the next five minutes with your left hand.  Go ahead - try to highlight some text and then copy and past with your left hand.  Try it!

What the first example above is showing you is that you probably have more strength with your right side. Not just your right hand, but the whole right side of your body working together to make a throwing motion. When you tried to throw with your left hand, if you’re like most people, you probably didn’t throw as well and had to think about how to move your body before throwing.

In fact, you might’ve even stepped forward with the wrong foot when making the motion.

With the second example of using your mouse with your left hand, I would put money that if that mouse was sitting to the left of you, it would be upsetting you. Meaning, seeing it there will be a distraction. Why? Because you are so used to reaching to the right that you probably even position your body in your chair based on your mouse being to the right. When it’s on the left – you might even feel yourself having to reposition your body. In fact, I believe it probably would throw off your timing when you type an email.

Now, how does this relate to your golf swing?

You probably use your left side in your golf swing with as much coordination as you used it to throw the paper. And with as much fluidity as when your left hand tried to control your mouse. The issue in your golf swing probably isn’t that you use too much right side – it’s that you probably do not use enough left side.

So the feeling of using too much right side in your golf swing is probably based on your left side hardly doing anything in comparison.

I guarantee that the winner of this past week’s PGA Tour event uses more right side in his swing than you do. Yet, you’re trying to take your right side out of the golf swing? So how is it possible that he’s using his right side more than you are … yet you’re being told to use less right side. It just doesn’t make sense!

The important point, and what you probably should’ve been told to work on, is that the Tour Player is probably using his left side and right side more equally than you do. Whereas your golf swing might be broken down to having your right side being 80% of your golf swing and your left side being 20% of your golf swing. He’s probably a lot closer to 50% right side and 50% left side.

So some might still say that they need to use less right side so that both sides are equal. Okay …. but if you do that … what part of your body will swing the golf club. Because if you try to use your right side as equally as you currently use your left side – you’d hardly be swinging the golf club!

Now please don’t read this and think that I’m saying that your left side provides the power – because I’m not. What we’re saying is that you’ll gain power and accuracy in your golf swing when both sides of your body are working together to produce an efficient, connected, consistent golf swing. So what you should be working on – instead of taking your right side out of the golf swing – is getting your left side involved.

However, and this is important – that doesn’t mean that you should just pick up a golf club and swing it with your left hand.

That actually might make things worse. So we have developed a drill that we call the Symmetrical Drill that allows you to feel both sides of your body working together. We use this drill often during our 3 day programs. Because just swinging with your left arm doesn’t guarantee that your whole left side is working with your right side. So drills like the Symmetrical Drill are critical!

To reiterate all that is written above - having one side of your body not doing as much as the other side of your body is one of the leading causes of compensations in your golf swing. And – ‘Compensations equal Inconsistency’. The more you compensate – the more inconsistent you are. The less you need to compensate for a weaker, less coordinated left side – the more consistent you will become!

So as many Golfers are told to turn their shoulders more or turn their hips more or stop sliding their hips or set their wrists or swing more inside to out or make a full follow-through … one reason that you might not be able to accomplish those tasks consistently might be that both sides of your body aren’t working together. Or in-other-words: One side of your body might not be doing enough.

Yet, unfortunately many Golfers are then told to use less of their right side --- when the solution is probably to keep using your right side just as much as you’re doing now, but to learn how to use your left side in coordination with your right side - so that both sides are working equally!

GMS Photo of the Week

This photo was taken at our Phoenix, Arizona location on January 24th, 2010.

This photo - with our Instructor James Rekart, along with Gill and Iain (who wrote one of this week's testimonials) was taken while standing on the greenest grass on earth at the Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia.

Iain, thank you for the photo, we appreciate it. And if you have a photo from your GMS Experience, send it to MyPlayerPhoto@GolfMadeSimple.com and we'll send you a small thank you gift.

""BAD STREAK" You're Not Alone!"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 188 - February 21st, 2007

We all go through “Good Streaks” on the golf course and “Bad Streaks”. Even Tiger and Annika go through their share of “Bad Streaks”. So you shouldn’t feel too bad when you go through your own “Bad Streak”.

The key is what you do while in the midst of a “Bad Streak”. Or maybe I should say - it’s what you don’t do while in a “Bad Streak” that has a positive affect on your golf scores!

What’s the worst thing to do while in a “Bad Streak”? Panic! So many Golfers go to the golf course and hit a “Bad Streak” and then panic. We get so upset with ourselves that we start to …

“I’m Now Hitting My Drives About 30 Yards Farther!”

On attending a GMS session in Phoenix (Jan 22-24, 2010), one of my aims was to hit my drives further.  Based on my round yesterday, I’d say I’m now hitting my drives about 30 yards farther.  I still have more work to do – but there has been an obvious improvement.

I can also feel a significant difference in my irons - making solid contact.  This is also backed up by an incident last weekend.  The ranger on duty drove up to our cart after I’d hit an 8 iron from 140 out and he said:  "You should have had that on video….the tempo of your swing, the balance and follow through was perfect.  The penetrating ball flight, landing softly on the green….all you need to do now is make the putt.”

That’s the first time I’ve heard a ranger comment on a players shot/swing – so I think the change must be noticeable.

As I said earlier – I still have work to do, but I can feel an improvement.  Thanks again.

“11 Fairways And 11 Greens In Regulation!”

Hi Hayden,

Quick update; played first 18 today in 30 mph winds, hit 11 fairways and 11 greens in regulation.

Was I happy? You know I was!

I hit the ball straighter than when I was an 11 handicap - forty years ago. I think you'd be proud. Stay well!

The Buzz with Alex

La Quinta, California - My Favorite GMS Location!

I just returned to Florida from a trip to our La Quinta, California location. And again, I’ve come away even more impressed with the La Quinta/Palm Springs area. It is so beautiful!

I also have to say how impressed I am with our partners at the Embassy Suites in La Quinta (where most of our Golfers stay). I’ve stayed in some nice hotels over the years, and although the Embassy isn’t a Four Seasons … it’s really, really nice.

The rooms are fantastic! There’s nothing like having an extra room with a sofa and sitting area to comeback to each day. Plus, the breakfast each morning is great. Fresh made omelets, fruit, oatmeal, juice, coffee, etc. And then each evening they have a complimentary Managers Reception, which is a perfect way to have a beverage before hitting the restaurants in the area like LG’s Steakhouse.

Also, our partner golf course, SilverRock is truly amazing. Besides having our own private teaching area – the golf course is as beautiful as a golf course can get. I guess that’s why they play a PGA Tour event on it each January!

The whole area is perfect. I guess that’s why our Instructor, Sam Burge, said to me: “Alex, everyday I come out to the golf course I need to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming. I truly can’t believe that I get to work in this environment every day. And it gets me excited when my Golfers see the area for the first time – as their excitement is contagious!

"If I Could've Made Some Putts ..."

During this past weekends PGA Tour event in Cancun, Mexico - a Player by the name of Cliff Cresege missed the cut and didn't get to play the weekend or earn any money from the event. However, although his week didn't end well - it did start well.

In the first round he scored a nice 3 under par 68 that put him in a tie for 5th place. However, a second round score of 4 over par 75 knocked him out of the tournament. How did Cliff go from a 68 to a 75 in one round? Did he lose his golf swing from one day to the next?

Actually, he hit the golf ball just as well in the second round as he did in the first round. In each round he hit 13 out of 18 greens in regulation. So his issue wasn't a problem of getting to the green ... the problem was what he did once he was on the green. In the first round he had 28 putts - in the second round he had 34 putts. Same amount of greens in regulation - yet 6 more putts.

I guess that pretty much explains why he went from making 5 birdies and only 2 bogies to making no birdies and having 4 bogies.

This might not be groundbreaking information - but, even on the highest level of golf - a lot of times your scores do come down to how well you're putting that day.

Have Fun With Your Driver

Have Fun With Your Driver!

How Important Is It To Hit Your Driver Better?

Just about every time you play 18 holes … you have 14 chances to hit a great drive. The question is: how many times out of those 14 chances are you satisfied with the results?

Yes, your aim should be to hit 14 great drives - that would be a fantastic accomplishment. However, reality says that won’t happen as much as even the best Golfer in the world would hope for. So if 14 out of 14 isn’t going to happen much – what number should you aim for?

Actually, that might not be the best way to go about judging yourself. The old phrase – “play one shot at a time” is as true to today, as it was back in 1860 when Willie Park Sr. won the first British Open at Prestwick Golf Club. I say this because what would happen if you go out for your first round this year and you do in fact hit 14 great drives – can you expect to do that every round you play this year? And if in your next round you “only” hit 11 great drives – does that mean you’re losing your golf swing?

Hitting your Driver well might be the most important aspect in golf. Yes, you need to putt well to score well. Yes, you need to be proficient with your wedges around the green to score well. Yet, it’s a rare person who doesn’t get excited or doesn’t judge how well they played … without relating it to how well (or unwell) you hit the golf ball off the tee.

There’s a reason why new Drivers cost anywhere from two to three times more than most new putters.

There’s a reason why golf courses charge you to use their driving range – but don’t charge you a dime to use their putting green. And I must add that it isn’t 100% about the cost of the range balls. Think about it this way:  hardly anyone uses the putting green already – so if people don’t use it when it’s free … would people use it if they had to pay for it?

What’s the reason? Your Driver is fun. Your putter is just something you need to use because the rule book says that you need to get the golf ball into the hole. Yes, your putter can be fun. But your Driver is more fun!

Here’s an example: Most Golfers wouldn’t mind one bit if someone said “that’s good, take it away” on every 3 foot putt you had. However, if you had to choose between hitting your Driver every hole or getting a “gimme” of being able to forgo hitting a tee shot on every hole and being able to drop the golf ball 250 yards in the middle of the fairway … which would you choose?

My guess is that you would take your chances with the Driver. Why do I say that? Well, if you were satisfied with not having to hit Driver and always having an iron to the green – then why wouldn’t you just play a Par 3 golf course the rest of your life? BECAUSE THE DRIVER IS FUN!!!

There’s a certain satisfaction built into ripping a golf ball with your best golf swing. The Driver is king! If you ever get a chance to go to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando – what you would see is 1,000’s of PGA Professionals flocking to the Taylor Made booth and the Callaway booth and the Titleist booth to first check out the latest …(take a guess) … obviously, the latest Drivers.

I find it interesting that many of these same Golf Professionals get just as excited about spotting the next ‘hot” Driver as teenage girls get when spotting the Jonas Brothers. Yet, these are the same Golf Professionals that are continually preaching to you that you first need to improve your short game and putting before working on your Driver. They’ll say “hitting your Driver farther isn’t as important as putting and chipping.”

However, the same scenario you see each week on the driving range of your golf course will be seen at the aforementioned PGA Merchandise Show. While the indoor range the PGA sets up for us to try the new equipment will be filled with Pros testing out every new Driver (and wait in line to do so) …. the putting green, set-up with every new putter available, will have less people on it than a golf course in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in the middle of February.

So I disagree with the frequently stated assessment that - “hitting your Driver farther isn’t as important as putting and chipping”. Actually, I believe your Driver is more important! Yes, improving your game on and around the green will help you to improve your score. However, continually hitting poor drives will affect your score just as much or more. And mentally – there’s nothing more draining than hitting one bad drive after another.

Yes, putting and chipping is something everyone needs to work on – there’s no debating that. However, there’s nothing more satisfying (on the golf course) as hitting your best Drive. There’s no place on the golf course that gives you a superior feeling of accomplishment than getting that “feeling” at impact and knowing that you just hit a pure golf shot!

So I declare 2010 as - “The Year Of Your Driver”.

Work harder this year than ever before on your Driver. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to go out and just bang Driver after Driver in your effort to improve. Because I know many Golfers that set out to improve their Driver – and they do – but they have worked so hard on a specific “Driver Swing” that they actually have gotten worse with their other clubs.

So improve your Driver … and if you do it the right way ... you’ll also improve everything else. How do you do that? It’s not as hard as one might think – it’s something we do every day with people that have traveled from around the world to see us for 3 days. And the reason they continually travel to see us is a testament to how effective our program is.

The Monkey has a “love/hate” relationship with their Driver as they try to perfect their Driver swing, but many times mess up their overall golf swing

The Player understands that to play consistently good golf – they need to hit the golf ball well off the tee

Are you ready to make 2010 “The Year Of Your Driver”?

"Who Has A Better Golf Swing, Phil Mickelson or Joe Durant?"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 229 - February 20th, 2008

Who would you rather play golf like – Phil Mickelson or Joe Durant? Now Joe Durant is a fine Player or he wouldn’t be on the PGA Tour – though I’m sure that Joe Durant wishes he could play like Mickelson. So unless you’re Joe Durant’s mother, I’m assuming you’d pick Mickelson.

Yet, from what I’m being told by many Golfers – they’d rather hit the golf ball like Joe Durant, as opposed to the 2nd ranked Player in the world – Phil Mickelson. In fact, I’d say that 7 out of every 8 Golfers I speak to rather hit the golf ball like Joe Durant.

Is that hard to believe? Maybe it’s ...

Hi Alex,

I just want to drop a note and thank all of you at GMS for a great experience here in Phoenix. It was intensive instruction.

James was the best instructor I have ever had and that’s saying a lot since I've had seven instructors in seven years. I truly have a better understanding of the golf swing after this week and look forward more than ever before to working on my game.

Thanks again,

The Buzz with Alex

In Winter - It's All About The Weather!

You know, I might sound like a broken record when I write about the beautiful weather our GMS locations experience during this time of year, but I have to say that we are truly blessed.

However, you know what's funny? That phrase - "I might sound like a broken record". Do you realize that if you say that phrase - there maybe many people under the age of 20 who might not know what you mean. I realize they probably would have heard that phrase before, but I can imagine more than a few under 20-somethings not knowing the origins of that phrase. Really - when was the last time anyone has listened to a record? It's really been over 30 years since records were mass produced!

So to celebrate youth, I'm changing the phrase to: "I might sound like a broken Ipod".

Below is the outlook in Degrees (Farenheit) for two of our west coast GMS locations for this weekend and beyond (Friday to Thursday):

In our La Quinta/Palm Springs, California location: 73° - 77°- 79° - 78° - 78° - 78° - 78°

In our Phoenix, Arizona location: 71° - 74°- 75° - 76° - 75° - 76° - 79°

Oh, and I should add, probably not a cloud will be seen during those 7 days.

So, one day over the next 10 or so days, when you have a moment - just stop for a second and think about this:  right now, there are some lucky people working with GMS on improving their golf swing outside in the absolute, most beautiful conditions one could ask for.

Wish you were here?

Would You Call A PGA Tour Player Inconsistent?

What is consistency? We often write about it in Golf Improvement Weekly (GIW). However, how much could a Golfer that plays only 1 or 2 times a week for only 6 months a year expect? It’s a good question.

To answer that question … let’s look to the best Players in the world on the PGA Tour to see how consistent they are. Then take into account that their level of consistency is literally in a different league – as they play a minimum of 4 times a week for at least 9 months a year, and they have been doing that for upwards of 20 years. So when we say a different league – their whole life is dependent on hitting that white ball consistent.

Yet, look at these stats. Out of the Top 10 finishers in the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic two weeks ago – 8 played this past weekend in Los Angeles. Out of those Players that played their very best golf week the prior week … 3 of them (38%) missed the cut ... including the winner of the Hope – Bill Haas.

So if the best Players in the world can go from playing their best golf to playing their worst golf in less than 1 week – so can you and I.

Slicers & Hookers Of The Golf Ball - Golf Improvement Weekly - February 3rd, 2010

Do You Have A Consistent Ball Flight?

Slicers & Hookers - get ready to be happy!

What is consistency? Consistency doesn’t mean that your golf swing has to be so perfect that you hit the golf ball straight every time you swing. Here's a better way to understand what a consistent golf swing is really about -- a consistent golf swing allows you to hit the golf ball in one direction about nine times out of ten swings. It’s being able to take one side of the golf course out of play (either the right side or the left side).

A consistent golf swing doesn't necessarily mean that you're hitting the golf ball straight.  There isn’t a Player in the world that hits the golf ball straight. Yet, there’s a misconception by millions of Golfers that that’s what the PGA Tour Players are doing. They’re not. Each Pro hits the golf ball with a curved ball flight – many with a draw, many with a fade, and some actually play a hook or a slice.

The key is that they know what direction it will go nine out of 10 swings. Which allows them to aim for it. For example: a consistent PGA Tour Player that fades the golf ball knows that their golf ball will most likely curve to the right. So they aim to the left because they know the golf ball will go anywhere from a 1 yard curve to as much as curving 25 yards to the right. On-the-other-hand, Pros that hit a draw will do the same by aiming to the right.

The key is that they know it’s going that way. So now they can aim towards one side of the golf course and play their predominant ball flight to drift back towards their target. Yes, you read that correctly - most Players do not align themselves directly at their target.  Whereas most struggling Golfers aim directly at their target hoping (and often times praying) for a straight shot - the best Players don't even expect to hit a straight shot!

And that’s what we help our Golfers accomplish --- finding your predominant ball flight so that you can make a PLAN on the golf course based on it. Which means that you’re becoming more consistent.

Take a guy like Fred Couples: Couples has what amounts to as about a 20 yard slice when he hits his Driver. Seriously, when he hits his Driver (or least in the late 1980’s and 90’s) – his ball sliced tremendously. Yet, he knew the golf ball would either slice or fade. …. so he aimed for it. Thus, he took the entire left side of the golf course out of play.

Meaning he would most likely aim left of the center of the fairway, take a fluid Freddie Couples golf swing …. and the ball would end up either on the right side of the fairway or right rough.

Yet, if most Golfers were presented with a Couples ball flight (a big slice), you would be rushing to the nearest Teaching Pro to help you get rid of that slice. Now, I’m not advocating a slice - however, I am advocating for you to find what your natural ball flight is – and then grooving your golf swing so that you become consistent with that ball flight.

Once you become consistent with a ball flight, you’ll be amazed how much simpler the game gets and how much more fun it is to stand on the tee holding your driver.

Now the $1,000,000 question is – “How do I become more consistent so that I know the direction of my golf ball?’

The answer is – learn to understand how to be in control of your clubhead. If you’re in control of your clubhead – then you’ll have better control of the direction the golf ball flies.

At GMS, we call this: controlling your ‘Length of Swing’. And what this means is that you heighten your sense of ‘Feel’ in your golf swing. Understanding the ‘Feel’ of your golf swing will enable you to be in control of your golf club through impact of the golf ball. Whereas most Golfers that aren’t consistent - loose control of their golf club with the very first movement of their back swing. So that by the time your clubhead gets to about knee high … you don’t actually know where your clubhead is.

And if you don’t know where your clubhead is … you have very little control over it.

Which means that the rest of your golf swing (about ¾’s of it) is spent making compensations as you try to regain control of your clubhead and golf swing. What are these compensations? They run the gamut of keeping too much of your weight back on the way down, casting, coming over the top, swinging outside to in, hitting behind the golf ball, topping the golf ball, decelerating, swinging too hard, lifting up, etc.

And all those compensations listed above (often misdiagnosed as being the ‘Cause’ of the bad shot – yet they really are an ‘Effect’) have you hitting errant, inconsistent golf shots that go in one direction on one swing and another direction on the next swing. Or in-other-words: your golf swing is inconsistent.

Now please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying by thinking this means you have to grip tight and swing slow. It doesn’t have anything to do with that. It’s about understanding and ‘Feeling’ your clubhead so that you’re in control of your golf swing.

Why do the Tour Pros look like they’re swing so slow and smooth, yet they hit it a mile? Because they’re in complete control of their clubhead from the very start of the golf swing. Why do most Golfers you play with seem to be swinging too fast, yet don’t hit it very far or in a consistent direction? Because they aren’t in control of their clubhead (even from the first movement), so the rest of their golf swing isn’t about hitting a solid shot as much as it is about trying to regain control of their golf club.

Most Golfers are overwhelmed with turning their shoulders, turning their hips, keeping behind the golf ball, shifting their weight, blah, blah, blah. Yet, they place very little emphasis on understanding how to be in complete control of their golf club from the very first movement in the backswing. Which ironically would help you to effectively do all the above without having to think about it as much as you presently do.

I guess that’s why many Golfers lack ‘Feel’ in their golf swing. And when you lack ‘Feel’ – you lack consistency. So during a 3 day GMS Program, we help Golfers to learn to ‘Feel’ their way to a more consistent golf swing!

The Monkey is so overwhelmed with what they “need” to be doing with their hips, shoulders, head, etc -- that they have very little control of their clubhead and thus little control over the golf ball

The Player is focused on ‘Feeling’ their clubhead and thus - is in control of their golf swing and the golf ball
Go ahead, be a Player!

"Bad Streak - You're Not Alone!"

“Long Days, But A Lot Of Fun & Great Improvement!”

Alex,

Jane and I recently attended Golf Made Simple at Sotogrande in Spain. We were a little skeptical prior to arrival, but we were really looking forward to it as one beginner and one 13 handicapper. Jeff was great from the very first moment and inspired us both in ways we hadn't imagined possible; both with the drills and with the careful attention to the mental aspects of the game.

The 9 holes each afternoon were very enjoyable. Long days, but a lot of fun and great improvement.

We really enjoyed every aspect of the Golf Made Simple program and can highly recommend it to teen handicappers and beginners alike. We both got a great deal out of it.

“I Broke 100 For The First Time!”

Greetings Alex and GMS staff. I finished my three days of instruction this past weekend, in Florida at the lovely Innisbrook Golf Resort. I have had instruction before, but Derek was by the far the best. He certainly made Golf Simple.

I had the feeling that he was personally invested in my improvement. He worked very hard and with passion for the three days. I was exhausted at the end of each day. I really enjoyed my three days of instruction with him. The results also spoke loud and clear.

My goal was to try and get under a hundred, as I had never done so before. On the second day, much to my surprise I shot a 98. All the drills were very relevant to my improvement. I plan to continue to practice all of them. I especially need to continue all drills. Thank you GMS and a very BIG THANK YOU to Derek.
