The Difference Between A 98 Golfer And An 80 Golfer!

"What's Holding You Back From Scoring 80?"

The Difference Between A 98 Golfer And An 80 Golfer!

How much better is a Golfer that averages 80 versus a Golfer that averages 98? The easy answer is 18 strokes. However, what goes into those 18 strokes? Well, that is hard to say because there are many different ways to score 80 and many different ways to score 98.

Yet, how can a 98 Golfer get down to an 80 Golfer? And trust me – I’m not going to get into the “you have to improve your short game” mantra.

You could look at it as if the 98 Golfer scores one stroke higher on each hole – but that’s usually not the case. More often than not – the 98 Golfer makes similar scores on around 11 of the 18 holes. So you really don’t have to improve 1 stroke per hole … it's more about improving over those 7 bad holes. In other words – it’s not an issue of the 98 Golfer playing badly from hole to hole – it’s more of a Blow-up Hole issue.

An 80 Golfer could be getting there by making: 7 Bogey’s, 1 Double Bogey, 1 Birdie and 9 Pars.

A 98 Golfer could be getting there by making: 8 Bogey’s, 4 Double Bogey’s, 2 Triple Bogey’s, 1 Quad Bogey and 3 Par’s.

What’s interesting is that these two Golfers had a similar amount of holes that were 1 over par. It seems that the major issue is that the 98 Golfer had three holes that added 10 extra strokes to their score. Which means that 10 of the 18 stroke difference (or 55% of the difference) was made on just three golf holes!

Blow-up holes – what causes them?

Blow-up holes can come from many different things, although let's just focus on one of them -- tee shots that go out of bounds – which means that you should go back to the tee to hit your drive again. That would mean the next golf ball you hit from the tee box would count as your 3rd shot. However, in my estimation, I would guess that over 90 out of every 100 Golfers don’t exactly play by the Rules of Golf – and instead of going back to the tee, they just drop a golf ball somewhere around where their golf ball was lost (playing it as a lateral hazard) – while adding 1 stroke.

So for the majority of Golfers – a bad tee shot counts only as one extra stroke – instead of stroke and distance (meaning going back to the tee and hitting again … which is more like a two stroke penalty). Which means that if you did hit a bad tee shot into the trees – it shouldn’t cause a Double, Triple or Quad Bogey. If you played well from there – it should end up as just a Bogey.

Except … when you do hit that bad tee shot and think to yourself: “Well, I just hit a terrible shot. I lost a golf ball, that’s a one stroke penalty, so I’m now hitting my third shot and I’m still 230 yards from the green. I better hit my 3 wood and try to get on the green and make the putt for par or get as close to the green as I can so that my next shot is an easy wedge.”

Your quote above reminds me of an old Jeff Foxworthy redneck joke: “You know you’re a redneck if anyone in your family died after saying – hey y’all ... watch this!”

It’s similar because whenever you hear a Golfer say what I wrote above about using their 3 wood (or something to that effect), you know a disaster is about to happen. Or in other words – here’s another Golfer about to have a Blow-up Hole.

Why not just hit your 5 iron somewhere short of the green (leaving yourself a great angle to the flag) and then hit your pitching wedge or something similar onto the green for your 4th shot. At the very worst you’ll make a Double Bogey and quite possibly walk away with a Bogey. Because if it's 230 yards to the center of the green … that means it might only be 210 to 215 yards to the front of the green. A 5 iron that goes only 150 yards leaves you with only 60 to 65 yards to the green.

But no – you hit your 3 wood. And yes, one time out of ten, you’ll hit the green or be within a few yards of it. And three times out of ten you’ll hit it somewhere in the fairway – anywhere from topping it 30 yards to hitting it 170 yards. Two times out of ten you’ll find a fairway bunker that’s not very inviting. And four times out of ten you’ll be back into the trees or across the fairway into the water.

So using that 3 wood on those ten opportunities allow you to hit the green once – which results in either a phenomenal par or two putts for Bogey. However, the other 9 times you play the hole – it results in maybe 1 Bogey, 2 Double Bogey’s, 3 Triple Bogey’s and 3 Quad Bogey’s.

While the 80 Golfer that hit the same exact tee shot as you did: will first read the golf course before selecting their club. Then he/she will choose a club that will allow them to advance the ball up the fairway and put it in a position that will allow them a great angle to attack the flagstick with either a wedge or 9 iron. Which would mean they would most likely end up with 7 Bogey’s and 3 Double Bogey’s.

The results of those 10 holes: the 98 Golfer in those 10 holes would be 26 over par – while the 80 Golfer would be 13 over par in those 10 holes.

Now, the 80 Golfer may also have a more consistent golf swing than the 98 Golfer does – however, it’s not as big of a difference as most Golfers expect. The biggest difference in their games might be that the 80 Golfer has more realistic expectations on what they can accomplish with their golf swing.

Whereas the 98 Golfer has grand illusions that they’re going to hit the green with their 3 wood – the 80 Golfer makes a PLAN based on what they see in front of them and then determines how they can play this hole using their strengths.

Now, the above situation is just one of many that happen on the golf course every time you play. And if we put all those situations together – that could add up to why (as previously stated above) 10 strokes of the 18 stroke difference happens on just 3 holes!

So, Mr. & Mrs. 98 Golfer ... just think how well you'd be playing if you could just eliminate those 3 Blow-up Holes.

The Monkey often selects which club to hit without first reading the golf course

The Player first reads the golf course to make a PLAN – then selects a club based on being able to play to their strengths

Go ahead, be a Player!

"What Can You Learn From A PGA Tour Player?"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 198 - May 3rd, 2007

Stats are a great way for you to understand what your expectations should be on the golf course. And believe it or not, many Golfers expectations of what the range of scores that they should be scoring is far off. For example: once a Golfer scores a 95 for the first time, they usually expect to score from 95 to 100 in their next 10 rounds. And when this doesn’t happen, there’s a sense of that you’re not improving and possibly getting worse.

This can’t be farther from the truth.

I’m sure you’d agree that the most consistent Golfers in the world are the Men and Women that play professionally on the PGA and LPGA Tours. And if we look at their consistency – you’ll actually see....

“More In 2 Days Than I Received In A Lifetime Of Lessons!”

Hi Alex,

First of all I just want to say what a great experience I had with Jeff and the Golf Made Simple Program at Heron Bay. I got more out of my 2 days with Jeff than I had in a lifetime of half-hour, patchwork lessons at home.

The simple practical, immediately applicable approach to improving your game was just what I needed in order to take some significant strides this golf season. I am already seeing improvement in the few rounds I have played since returning home. Jeff was an excellent instructor /teacher. He was very patient and clearly outlined the objectives we were trying to accomplish from drill to drill.

I definitely plan on attending GMS again (probably next spring - level 1.5).

Thanks again and hopefully I will be able to convince some of my golfer friends to pay you guys a visit. God knows some of them could use it!

“85 - My Best Round Ever!”

Hi Marc,

More details on how I'm hitting it better--much better tempo and much more solid contact. My regular golf partners have commented on that and how I seem much more relaxed. And I am! I'm freed up from all those swing thoughts you mentioned in the latest GIW. I'm just concentrating on tick tock on the course and the drills on the range. I especially like the step thru drill--it really helps get my left side involved.

It came together today when I shot 85--my best round ever. And that's not all -- I started the back with 4 bogies BUT THEN, over the last 5 holes, by far my best ever stretch--par par birdie par par for a 39! First time ever under 40 for 9 holes.

Thanks a lot - Tick Tock

The Buzz with Alex

Wow - You're Going To Love This!

Wow - we just received great news! Our partners at our Lake Tahoe area location - Whitehawk Ranch - just called us to let us know that they are lowering the rates they charge us. This means that we're being charged less to use the golf practice facilities, the golf course, as well as the lodging.

So GMS had a special meeting and we decided to pass those discounts onto our Golfers!

It wasn't a hard decision to make. Although, there were some thoughts of not passing on the discounts and using the extra dollars to take a trip to Hawaii or Italy. But, as tempting as that is - we feel great passing these discounts onto you.

Whitehawk Ranch is such a great location in California - just north of Lake Tahoe and less than 1 hour from Reno. We want you to experience what Marc feels is our best location -- our maybe a better way to say it is - his favorite GMS location.

If you're looking for quiet, peaceful, turn the cell phone off for 3 days, great accommodations and even better golf --- our Lake Tahoe location is unbelievable. Yes, the deluxe cabins do have wifi if you want to get on the internet, however you might not even want to do that. We received this email late last year from the wife of a Golfer that came to see us in Lake Tahoe:

My Husband's skill has greatly improved and it impressed a lot of his friends. They all want to take the class from your school. And we all loved the resort, my daughters 12 and 10 years old really enjoyed the little lake and horseback riding in Greagle. My husband relaxed and enjoyed so much that he did not even touch the computer to check e-mails each evening as he had planned to do before the trip. The place is very beautiful and relaxing.

Thanks,

Joann P - Sent December 23rd, 2009 - Husband attended GMS on August 21st to 23rd, 2009

Are you looking to get away? Our Whitehawk Ranch location just north of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains is ideal. And now with the discounts we have received and are passing onto you -- it's even more ideal!

Is Your Golf Swing Too Complicated?

Is Your Golf Swing Too Complicated?

Strike The Golf Ball With An Effortless Swing!

The idea that golf needs to be as complicated as many Golfers are making it is a frustrating/confusing concept to me. Every week, I hear of a new, groundbreaking concept that someone has come up with that’ll help all Golfers to hit the golf ball farther and straighter. I’ve heard about new grips, swing plane concepts, weight transfer systems, along with stuff I don’t want to even mention that supposedly will make your swing automatic.

And the funny part is that there are Golfers out there that believe in this stuff because they feel as though – ‘the more complicated, the more better’. These Golfers don’t want to make their golf swing simple. This group of Golfers has a weird perversion towards making things more complicated. They feel as though they need to have 8 steps in their swing. They feel as though that in addition to keeping their head still, they also need to get their elbow tucked into their side as they shift their weight, keep their golf club on plane and use the X-Factor.

It’s not that these Golfers don’t want to make it simple – it’s more about that they get so involved with listening and reading to all the golf information out there, that they start believing the golf swing has to be complicated. But I believe these Golfers are in denial because as much as they say that they do not want to think about all that stuff (and the hundreds of other things they’re thinking about every swing) – they continually think about it every swing..

They often say to themselves that they’re thinking too much and need to swing without so many thoughts - Yet, many of these aforementioned Golfers have a tendency of getting frightened if they’re not thinking of enough things every time they swing. And although they readily admit that their bad shots are brought about because they were thinking too much – as they approach the golf ball, regardless of how much they try, they go back to thinking about everything they need to do in their golf swing.

These Golfers are constantly telling themselves to swing with no thoughts – that is until they prepare to hit the golf ball when they automatically revert back to thinking too much before, during and after their golf swing.

New Golfers Improve Faster

How is it possible that using the GMS - Results Based Approach, we can get a Golfer that’s just learning to play to be able to break 90 in less than a year? While at the same time there are Golfers that have been playing for years and have taken 100’s of lessons, been through countless golf schools – and still aren’t able to break 90 and/or 100 with any consistency?

As one Golfer that had spent enough money on golf lessons to support a small country (without seeing much improvement); recently wrote to us: “I think the difference between GMS and the other schools that we have attended are that you don’t get students bogged down with mechanics. Your explanations are easy to understand, the drills are fun, and your focus is on one thing…impact.”

Impact – What An Interesting Concept!

Yet, when you hear frustrated Golfers talking about what they’re working on in their golf swing, it often has nothing to do with impact. Everything is about how they saw themselves on video, how they’re taking the club too far outside, how their head is moving too much, how they’re not turning enough on the backswing, how they don’t have the butt of the club pointing down the target line at a certain point of their golf swing or how they don’t get enough fiber in their diet.

Well maybe, just maybe the reason that all those above compensations are happening is because you don’t know impact. Maybe if you worked on being able to get the different parts of your body working together so you’re more in control of the golf club, and/or understood what the motion of impact felt like – maybe all these other so called problems would self correct.

As the majority of Golfers that are struggling with their golf swing are learning to fix compensations by being prescribed more compensations that are being masqueraded as swing fixes – we see Results with our Golfers because many bad swing compensations will be eliminated by simply working on impact.

Do you know that you can eliminate the “over the top, outside in, casting” problem by working on impact?

Yet, many Golfers that have a simple slicing problem are told that the reason for this slice is the above mentioned “over the top, outside in, casting” problem. They are then given another compensation being masqueraded as a swing fix such as learning to ‘tuck in your elbow on the down swing’. And although it’s very easy to tuck in your elbow (or use any other swing “improvement” compensation) on practice swing after practice swing – this Golfer can never do it when there’s a golf ball to hit.

Why?

Because trying to tuck in your elbow is a swing “improvement” compensation that is being used to fix another compensation already in your swing. And that compensation is being used to cover-up another compensation. And thus, you’ll have to learn another compensation to fix that compensation and then another compensation to fix another. And pretty soon you have a golf swing that’s built upon compensations.

And when all these compensations align – you hit a good shot - yet, this doesn’t happen the majority of the time. This is why some Golfers hit the golf ball straight sometimes, to the right sometimes and to the left sometimes; why you hit the golf ball solid sometimes, behind the ball sometimes and top it sometimes – any of these could happen on any swing because you never know which compensation in your swing is not going to work.

So golf becomes frustrating because you have so many compensations in your golf swing that you end up saying – “I’m so inconsistent, I have so many things wrong with my golf swing.” And out of desperation, this Golfer now seeks out someone that will give them a complete swing overhaul that has nothing to do with impact – and as this Golfer struggles worse than ever with this complete swing change, they hear the infamous phrase of “well, you have to get worse before you get better!’

Great, by hearing that, it should make you feel better about your struggle. And the funny thing is that all that could be avoided and good golf swings could be created by understanding impact.

The Monkey jumps from compensation to compensation because each compensation they add to their golf swing to fix another compensation leads to more bad swing habits that cause you to add more compensations

The Player understands the motion involved with impact

Go ahead, be a Player!

"Top 5 Things You Need To Do To Play Your Best Golf"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 236 - April 9th, 2008

One – You need to breathe on the golf course. "Breathe? I always breathe, if I didn't breathe, I'd be dead!" Well, there's a difference between the breathing that many flustered people have in stressful situations and the breathing that keeps the Player calm, cool and collected.

And to many, Golf is a stressful situation - especially if you have high expectations for yourself.

When's the last time you breathed on the golf course? Well, in last week's PGA Tournament in Houston, breathing was a big part of winner Johnson Wagner's PLAN. As Wagner said - "Warming up on the range, I was ….

“My 3 Days With GMS Was Tremendous!”

Hi Marc,

My 3 days with GMS were outstanding. I learned so much during the 3 day program. My golf striking over the 27 holes of golf was the best it had ever been. I can remember one shot that made such a crisp ball striking sound that others heard it on the other side of the fairway. Also, driving the green over a huge tree for an eagle putt was definitely a great memory.

I can't say enough about our instructor, Sam Burge. Tremendous teacher, funny, to the point, and for me, the one left handed player in the group, he even demonstrated left handed. I plan to utilize the Instructor for Life program, as I have a renewed dedication to succeed and have more fun with golf.

All of the drills made me feel stable, so that I could focus on turning the core back. If I rushed at the top, then all I could do is use my arms. Yet the drills took the feel of active arms away and replaced it with active core turns.

Again, thanks to GMS and thanks to Sam.

“My Lowest Scores Ever!”

Hello Hayden,

Beth and I wanted to let you know how we are progressing in the two months since our Golf Made Simple three day golf school. Beth is playing some great golf. A week and 1/2 ago she shot her lowest score, an 85 on our home course. Her putting and ball striking have improved greatly. The most significant improvement is her confidence. The Women's Club Championship is in two weeks and she is very excited about her chances.

I am still humming when I have the driver in my hand and the results are fantastic. More fairways lead to lower scores. I shot two 78's this week which are my lowest scores ever. I am also enjoying the short game. When I miss a green I look forward to chipping it close to the pin and one putting. I am also using my time at the range more productively and before every round I go through the 29 ball drill which helps my rhythm significantly.

We plan on taking the Level 1.5 course in the Autumn.

Best Regards,

The Buzz with Alex

This Is Such A Great Location!

We're so excited about our newest location at Grand Geneva Resort in Wisconsin. It seems that we're getting phone calls everyday from Golfers that have stayed at Grand Geneva in the past -- telling how we made a great decision to open a program there.

We knew it was a great resort and golf course -- it's just nice to hear it from others.

So it goes without saying that the response of people already signing up to do a GMS program at our newest location has exceeded our expectations. So we have decided to send an additional Instructor up to Grand Geneva Resort so that we can do 2 programs at a time -- still limited to only 4 Golfers per program.

This is great because it will allow us to offer all our GMS Alumni more Level 1.5 Programs. The demand for Level 1.5 from Golfers that want to attend GMS has been great - yet we haven't been able to offer as many programs as we'd like -- since we've been so booked.

However, the good news is that we'll be able to offer more at Grand Geneva. So demand for GMS at Grand Geneva is high -- so we have added another Instructor. We can't add a 3rd Instructor -- so give us a call before all dates are sold-out!
