US Open - Pebble Beach - Tiger Woods

The Last Time The US Open Was In Pebble Beach -
History Was Made! Who Will Make History In 2010?

As the US Open Golf Tournament returns this coming weekend, it should provide for interesting theater as there are a few big, boldfaced names involved: US Open - Pebble Beach - Tiger Woods. Three subjects – each alone is powerful enough to pique even the most casual golf fans interest. Yet, considering the history of those three names, when used together – there aren’t many things that have the potential of being more exciting.

Yes, things with Tiger are different now. And no, the whole story of the US Open shouldn’t be about Tiger. The US Open was first played 115 years ago and has been considered one of the top 4 tournaments in the world well before Tiger was around. And Pebble Beach has been thought of as one of top golf courses in the world for far longer than Tiger has been ranked #1 in the world.

So while the US Open at Pebble Beach is much more significant than any one Player - why is Tiger still part of the story? Meaning, after soiling his name and reputation, and no longer in the exclusive group of star athletes that you could consider as a role model – why is he still part of the storyline?

For the simple reason that the 2000 US Open was held at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and for anyone that has forgotten (or wasn’t involved in golf at that time) … what Eldrick “Tiger” Woods did during those 4 days of golf is, and will forever be, one of the most impressive events that has ever happened in the game of golf.

He won the tournament by 15 strokes. Now this wasn’t a PGA Tour Player playing against journeymen on the mini tours. This was an event that had the best Players in the world playing on one of the great golf courses of the world. 15 Strokes! Tiger was 12 under Par – the Golfer in second place was 3 over Par. And considering that more than half the Golfers in the tournament finished at 13 over Par or more (25 strokes or more higher) -- all I can say is "Wow!"

Have you ever seen a sporting event – let alone a golf tournament – that was so thoroughly dominated by one person?

Yes, I know that at least 50% of the golfing population is sick and tired of hearing about Tiger – I understand. However, what he did at Pebble Beach in 2000 was one of the greatest sports performances ever! And regardless of what has happened in his personal life, and regardless of how much you may “hate” and/or feel betrayed by Tiger – winning the US Open by 15 strokes on Pebble Beach is an incredible feat!

What will happen this year at Pebble Beach? Who will win? I wish I knew.

Below I have listed three scenarios that you’re likely to see …along with two questions I’m interested in seeing answered:

Scenario #1: There will be at least one Golfer that you've never heard of that will rise up onto the leaderboard in the first two days. This Golfer may never take the lead, it may just be that on the front nine holes on Friday they shoot a 33. But their score through 27 holes gets them on the leaderboard and causes you to say: “Harry Bafupnick? Who the heck is Harry Bafupnick?”

Scenario #2: There will be a Golfer that has won a Major Championship, but hasn’t won a Major for at least a few years, that will be hanging around the leaderboard after 54 holes. For example: someone like a Justin Leonard, or Zach Johnson or Shaun Micheel, etc.

Scenario #3: That a Golfer that has won a Major Championship (or multiple Majors), but now is in the 40 and over age group will make some noise on Sunday. For example: someone like an Ernie Els, Davis Love III, David Toms or Retief Goosen, etc.

Question #1: Can one of the Golfers that are often included in the “Best Player In The World Without A Major” category win this tournament. I guess that title belongs to Sergio Garcia. But, there are many great, great Players that haven’t won a Major yet. Are we going to see a breakthrough from Ian Poulter, Anthony Kim, KJ Choi or Luke Donald?

Question #2: The “Young Guns”. There are so many great young Players out there that could fire a 65 at any given moment. How will they do at the US Open at Pebble Beach? Will we see Rory McIlroy, Ryo Ishikawa or Dustin Johnson make a statement at Pebble Beach just as Jack Nicklaus did at the 1962 US Open at Oakmont or as Tiger Woods did at the aforementioned 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach?

Regardless of who wins … US Open – Pebble Beach – Tiger Woods … that’s a very strong threesome. Enjoy the golf tournament --- it should be fun!

"Golf's US Open Next Week"

Watch and Learn

Excerpted from GIW Issue 242 - June 4th, 2008

So we have one more tournament on the PGA Tour until everybody whips themselves into a frenzy the following week at the US Open in San Diego, California. I associate the US Open with being in the heart of golf season – so that may mean that Golfers are starting to get into their weekly games and enjoying life.

I believe there a few things you should be observing when watching the US Open on television. One of which is the Players making their PLAN before each shot. I'd like for you to take notice and compare how you do it, versus how they do it.

The common Golfer walks (or drives their cart) down the fairway to their golf ball; once at the ball; they find their yardage, look at their clubs and say to themselves....

“It Was The Best Money I Ever Spent!”

Hello to everyone at GMS,

Just want to let you know I had a fantastic time at Landsdowne Resort, Virginia with Jeff and my other three classmates. You matched us up perfectly! They were a great group of people.

The resort was awesome - staff were very friendly and helpful - food delicious! It’s a great place.

Jeff is a fantastic instructor. I enjoyed every minute of my lesson and would highly recommend the classes.

I must say, this week Ron and I went out and played 9 holes and what a difference!! My ball striking was right on (tick tock), I felt very confident in what I was doing - I just thoroughly enjoyed my game.

I will really work hard on improving my putting with the easy to follow instructions for practicing. I think I will reach my goal this summer - which will be great!

I can't thank you enough - it was the best money I ever spent!

“I'm 69 Years Old And Playing My Best Golf Ever!”

Hi Jeff:

I know you haven't heard from me since I was in the GMS class in Innisbrook, but I never quit working and it paid off big time.

I'm 69 years old and playing the best golf ever! We were in Myrtle Beach on a 7 day golf outing with 8 guys. Everyone had about the same handicap as I did (a couple of guys were 3 strokes lower). For the whole week I had: the most birdies; the most skins; the low net score; the low gross score and the most money!

Back home on Monday, I shot a 77 at my home course. I'm now playing my dream of scoring under 80! It will be only a matter of time till I play my first scratch round.

Thank you GMS,

"The Ultimate GMS Location!"

Wisconsin Golf Resort

The above quote comes directly from GMS Instructor, Hayden Lewis, as he described to me our newest GMS location at the Grand Geneva Resort.

Located just 1 hour outside Chicago and less than 45 minutes from Milwaukee – the Lake Geneva area of Wisconsin is the leading summertime destination in the Midwest United States. And leading Lake Geneva to this high ranking is our newest location - The Grand Geneva Resort.

Here's a trivia question for you: What did Al Capone and Hugh Hefner have in common? Well, hold-on, don’t even answer that. All kidding aside, they both had estates in Lake Geneva.

The Grand Geneva Resort, with 36 holes of golf, a fantastic practice area, beautiful accommodations right on property, multiple restaurants, etc. – you
could understand why Hayden said what he did. What makes this statement so powerful is that GMS already has a few locations that have 36 holes (or more) of golf, fantastic practice areas, beautiful accommodations right on property, multiple restaurants, etc.

So Hayden, why is Grand Geneva the Ultimate GMS Location:

“The Brute golf course (at Grand Geneva Resort) might be the nicest golf course I have ever seen. The conditions are immaculate! And although I haven’t stayed in the rooms, everyone says they’re excellent. And everyone loves the restaurants. I can definitely vouch for the lunches being great! The facilities are beautiful. The golf shop must win awards each year as it’s the nicest golf shop I have ever seen. It’s the perfect location for what we do. It’s the ultimate GMS location.”

Whether you’re driving from somewhere in the Midwest or you’re flying in – Lake Geneva is easy to get to. If you’re flying – Chicago’s O’Hare International is just 60 minutes and Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport is just 45 minutes. And with just about every airport in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe having a non-stop flight to O’Hare – you're closer than you think to the Ultimate GMS Location!

So if you want to do the GMS Program because you know your golf game needs it … why not attend in the Ultimate GMS Location!

Golf Improvement Weekly - "Why Can't I Improve My Driver?"

"Why Can't I Improve My Driver?"

Are You Practicing Like A Monkey Or A Player?

If I was a Golfer in the northern Hemisphere that mainly played during the months of April through October (while sneaking in a late fall or early spring round once-in-a-while), I’d have my focus primarily on hitting good tee shots more than anything else. I mean … c’mon, is there anything more fun and satisfying than hitting a great drive?

Think of it this way: On most Par 4’s and Par 5’s – if you hit a very good drive, you should be on or next to the green in two or three shots on the Par 4 and three or four shots on the Par 5 … even if your next iron/hybrid/fairway wood shots are slightly below average.

However, if you hit a slightly below average drive from the tee (meaning still keeping it in play, but without much distance); you would need to hit a combination of two or three excellent iron, hybrid and/or fairway shots to be on or next to the green in two or three shots.

So since you may be the Golfer that has a limited golf season (and time) to work on your golf game -- Doesn’t it make more sense to prepare yourself to hit great tee shots?

Yes, to play your best golf – you’ll need a combination of playing well with your Driver, irons, hybrids, fairway woods, wedges and putter … as well as having a PLAN.

However, every hole starts out with a tee shot. And frequently, 14 holes start with you Driver. And although you use your putter on all 18 holes - sometimes 2 or 3 times a hole – equaling anywhere from 34 to 44 putts for most Golfers – your tee shot sets the tone for your round more than any other shot.

Saying that – that doesn’t mean you should go to the driving range and just start to bang tee shot after tee shot onto the driving range. Because over the years, the practice range has actually hurt more Golfers than it has helped. That’s why you should have a practice system that allows you to find consistency.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that the first driving range ever created (in 1913 - Pinehurst, North Carolina) was given the name– Maniac Hill? Which means that close to 100 years ago Golfers were banging golf ball after golf ball without much thought like maniacs …. and through extensive research I have found that 99.99% of Golfers are still doing that today!

How is consistency found?

It’s found by having a Practice PLAN. A practice system you can use so that you understand what you should be practicing based on how you’re hitting the golf ball. Or as we say – a Practice PLAN based on having you find your predominant ball flight, then practicing in a way that will allow you to make that ball flight more consistent. Hence, a Practice PLAN that allows you to learn your golf swing so that you won’t have to think about it while on the golf course.

So that all you need to do on the golf course is PLAN and then swing!

For example – during our 3 day GMS programs: we use a Practice PLAN to help you hit the golf ball better, however this is also a PLAN (or Practice System) that you would use at home. The Practice PLAN is set-up to allow you to first work on consistent, solid contact (Impact) with the golf ball. Because hitting in the same consistent place on the clubface of the golf club is critical. If you’re hitting in different areas of the clubface – the flight of your golf ball will be consistently inconsistent.

So Part One is based on practicing impact and solid ball strikes – getting your body, legs and arms into a strong impact position.

Part Two of the Practice PLAN is to start feeling how your clubhead and body work together from the very first movement of the backswing. This gets you to practice your backswing (path, plane, etc.), so that you start to coordinate your body, hands, arms, hips, legs, etc from the very first movement. This is something that over 90% of Golfers don’t work on at all. Sure, many Golfers work on their backswing. But how many spend much time on the very first movement?

Do you know that many of the issues that you work on in your golf swing (coming over the top, swinging outside in, open clubface at impact, hitting behind the golf ball, topping the golf ball, you name it) often are the effect of not practicing the first movement of your golf swing?

Part Three of the Practice PLAN is practicing the movements bringing you into impact.

Most Golfers we see (before coming to see GMS) are working hard on the transition from backswing to forward swing – however, the issue is that these Golfers are not working on Part One and Part Two of the Practice PLAN. So regardless of how hard they work on the transition – they will always (100% of the time) revert back to their old, bad habits because the bad habits in Part One of their golf swing weren’t fixed. And because Part One wasn’t addressed adequately – Part Two wouldn’t have been addressed – and thus Part Three will never be fixed.

The result is that even though they have been working on the transition for years upon years ---- they continually revert back to their bad habits and rarely (if ever) improve their golf swing!

Maybe that’s why we’re constantly seeing Golfers that tell us that they’ve been playing Golf for 5, 10, 20 years and have never improved as much as they have with GMS. Why is this? We have a Practice PLAN (a Practice System) that works!

Read the Testimonials on the website. We started receiving so many testimonials that we had to create separate pages by year. However, as the testimonials continued to pour in – we then had to start separating each year into different pages based on scoring level. So all testimonials are now grouped by the year the testimonial was sent to us, along with the scoring level of the Golfer sending it in!

And we could list even more than we currently do, but the web pages would be too long! Here’s just a random bunch of testimonials from 2009 from Golfers breaking 90 - http://golfmadesimple.com/golf-made-simple-testimonials-breaking-90.html.

Now, going back to practicing your Driver:  How have you been practicing your Driver? Are you going to driving range and hitting golf ball after golf ball like a Monkey? Or do you have a Practice PLAN that allows you to find where the breakdown is in your golf swing – which would then allow you to isolate the issue so that you can fix it – which would then allow you to test it under pressure before taking it to the golf course?

Or do you go to the driving range with high expectations … however, often after just a short time of hitting golf balls, creating your own little Maniac Hill and leaving the driving range wondering why you can’t hit the golf ball?

The Monkey practices their Driver like everyone else … just swinging and swinging trying to find something that works for more than a swing or two

The Player has a Practice PLAN using a proven system that allows them to work on the important parts of their golf swing so that they put brains in their muscles (muscle memory) … which allows them to hit the golf ball better on the golf course without having to think about it every swing

Go ahead, be a Player!

GMS Photo of the Week

This photo, sent in by Jamie and Rhonda Durham of Wenona, Illinois - was taken at our St. Augustine, Florida location on March 10th, 2010 with GMS Instructor Jeff Seigler.

This photo was sent to us with a message that reads:

I can’t say enough about how much working with Jeff has improved my golf game. I hit the golf ball longer and straighter than I ever have before and my scores have improved. Hole number five at our club is a very difficult par 4 for the average male golfer to par let alone birdie and I just did that the other day. A Birdie, I could not believe it. Thanks again GMS!

"Does Poor Balance Cause Poor Golf Swings?"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 279 - May 26th, 2009

Would a Golfer with poor balance have a better or worse chance of having a consistent golf swing?

The obvious answer seems to be that the Golfer that doesn’t have good balance would have a more inconsistent golf swing than the Golfer that employs good, solid balance. So if that’s true – why haven’t you worked on your balance? If true – should you be spending your time working on your swing path and swing plane or should you be working on your balance skills? Could poor balance be causing your swing ....

“You Flushed 20 Years Of Bad Habits Out Of Our Monkey Brains!”

Hi Golf Made Simple Gang,

My friends and I just finished GMS last week (May 3,4,5) with James in Arizona. What a BLAST!

Your simple concepts and drills flushed 20 years of bad habits and misconceptions out of our monkey brains in the first four hours.

And what really made our time even more great was James. His enthusiasm, understanding of the golf swing, and easy-going manner is infectious. He is a credit to your organization. We are all looking forward to a summer of lower golf scores and will keep you posted on our progress.

If You're Busy, But You Need GMS ...

If you haven’t heard of our Denver, Colorado location at Green Valley Ranch – you should take notice.  GVR (as we often refer to the golf course in the office), is again hosting the Colorado Open Championships.  So we’d like to applaud our golf course partners for again hosting this important event.

They don’t just give the state’s Open Championship to any golf course.  GVR is a great golf course and a fantastic golf facility.  Why fantastic?  Well, besides the golf course – we love the practice facility!  The practice facility was designed to be a practice facility – meaning many golf courses basically just have a driving range … GVR has a practice facility!  It’s fantastic.

What we also love about this location is the convenience.  If GMS ever had a facility that is perfect for the Golfer that wants to fly in on Thursday night – do the GMS Program on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – then fly back home Sunday night (or fly in Sunday and do Monday to Wednesday) – Denver is the place!

First - Denver International Airport has non-stop flights from everywhere.

Second – Our hotel, The Hyatt Place, is only 15 minutes away from the airport and offers a free shuttle to and from the airport.

Third – The Hyatt Place also offers free shuttle service to and from the golf course each day!

Fourth – Breakfast is complimentary at the hotel, lunch is with us at the golf course, dinner is at one of the restaurants within walking distance right outside the hotel … or better yet, take the free shuttle to Emil-Lene’s Sirloin House (a real Colorado steakhouse -- ohh, so good!)

So basically, if you have a busy schedule, and want to do the GMS Program because you know your golf game needs it … for the absolute simplest logistics of getting in and getting out - our Denver location is the best!

For dates and information on our Denver, Colorado location – go to our Denver location web page by clicking here or give me a call.
