Your Golf Game Has: Good Habits & Bad Habits & Mediocre Habits?

Your Golf Game Has: Good Habits & Bad Habits

What About Your Mediocre Habits?

Habits in Golf are usually classified as being good or bad. Have you ever heard of having a Mediocre Habit?

Mediocre Habits - this is like a gray area. You know that you have some Good Habits and you know have some Bad Habits - these are easy to spot because they're black or white, they standout and that's good. You can notice your Bad Habits and correct them and you can see your Good Habits and continue to profit from them. But it could be your Mediocre Habits that are killing your golf game.

What's a Mediocre Habit?

Let's start with your Driver. I mean what a great place to start - Everybody wants to hit their Driver better - don't you? Sometimes you hit it well and sometimes you hit into the trees. If you had only Good Habits with your Driver your name would be Tiger or Annika because you'd be hitting it well almost every shot. If you only had Bad Habits, you'd always hit the ball into the trees. Yet, you sometimes hit a good one and sometimes hit a bad one. Why is this? Why can't you become more consistent? Because you have some Mediocre Habits!

For example - When you're on the tee ready to hit your Drive, where do you aim? A Golfer with Mediocre Habits would aim down the middle. They say - "I want to be in the middle of the fairway, so that's where I want to aim."

A Player with Good Habits would aim based on where the trouble is on that hole and what your predominate ball flight is. This Player says - "OK, there's water 230-yards down the right side of the fairway and if I hit a bad shot, I usually slice the ball to the right. So, I'll aim down the left side of the fairway. If I hit a good shot and the ball stays straight, I'm in the left rough or left side of the fairway. If I hit a bad shot, I still have plenty of room for my ball to slice without rolling into the water." The Golfer with the Mediocre Habit of aiming down the middle will be in the water 4 out of the 14 drives during their round and hit a good shot in play on 6 drives.

Th adds up to 10 drives ... what about the other 4-shots?

Well, because you're so worried about how you're going to hit your drive and the possibility of hitting the ball in the water again - you make a tension-filled, defensive swing that you pop-up 3 times and top once. So the end result using your Mediocre Habit of aiming down the middle is 6-good drives for you and 8-bad drives for the golf course.

The Golf course wins 2-up! Doesn't it always?

Who do you know that always aims down the middle? And don't mention any Player on the PGA or LPGA Tour or anyone that consistently breaks 80! Because these Players don't have as many Mediocre Habits as the Monkey's do. Why? Because the ultimate Good Habit - ahh, or maybe I should say - the Ultimate Exceptional Habit of a Player is to have a PLAN! And the only ones planning to hit the ball down the middle are the Monkeys.

Why is aiming down the middle a Mediocre Habit as opposed to a Bad Habit? Well, at least you're aiming! Golfers with Bad Habits don't even look where they're aiming. They just put their tee in the ground, golf ball on top of the tee, stand to the side of the ball - take a couple of "Ornamental Practice Swings" and then hit the ball. The only time they looked to see where they were hitting the golf ball was for a split second when they were walking up to the tee box.

Yet, this is what 3 out of every 8 Golfers do on the golf course.

And you ask how do I get this information and why do I use a number like 8 Golfers? I know this because when I used to conduct classes every week, I would have 4-Golfers per class and I'd do 2-classes per week. And 3 out of every 8 Golfers would do it as I described above. 4 Golfers out of 8 would have the Mediocre Habit of aiming down the middle and 1 Golfer out of 8 would actually look to see where the trouble was before aiming.

That is until I trained them to be Players!

And in an interesting coincidence with above example, about only 1 out of every 8 Golfers was satisfied with their Drives. And in an even more interesting development you might have heard that only 1 out of every 8 Golfers break 90 -- on a 100% of the time consistent basis. The more I think about it, the more I believe it's not a coincidence.

What about you? What do you think?

This is so vital to your golf improvement that I'll repeat it again - the best Players in the world do not aim down the middle. They look for the trouble and considering their ball flight - they aim away from the trouble. That's why they're Players - they have a PLAN. If your PLAN is to aim down the middle - that might be one reason you're a frustrated Golfer.

Now here's my next question for you to answer - Why did you always aim down the middle? Who told you to do that? And if you've always aimed down the middle and yet haven't been satisfied with the results of your drives - why do you still aim there?

Mediocre Habits - I have a story for you.

A Golfer is standing on the 1st Tee and pops up her drive and it goes almost straight up in the air and lands about 35-yards away. She looks at no one in particular and says - "I hate when I do that. I wish I could stop popping up my tee shots!"

Which opens the door for the Monkey that's playing in your group and waiting to play the part of the expert Golf Professional - "Sarah, I think you're teeing up the ball too high. On the next hole tee the ball much lower."

"OK, I'll try that."

Wait a minute - this isn't a story about Mediocre Habits, this is more about Bad Habits because Sarah is now taking advice from a Monkey that has never broken 90 himself and often times has trouble breaking 100 and in addition to that he's always in remorse about how he hits his Driver. This is a Bad Habit because next hole as Sarah is teeing up the ball, the Monkey is standing there with his arms crossed saying - "That's good Sarah, but tee it a little bit lower." So Sarah does and then sets up for her tee shot and tops the ball about 17-yards into the rough in front of the fairway.

"Sarah, it looked as though you were trying to kill the ball on that shot, try to slow down your swing next time" proudly proclaims the Monkey.

"Yes, I think you're right, I swung too hard on that one. I need to slow down."

And of course all this advice comes after the Monkey himself made a triple bogey on the first hole.

On the 3rd hole Sarah tees up her ball as the Monkey assumes his position. "Yes Sarah, that's a good tee height. Now make sure you swing nice and easy on this one. Don't try to kill it!"

So Sarah says to herself "Swing nice and easy", even though the Monkey that just gave her this advice had just hit a bad tee shot himself on the third hole and exclaimed to everyone in the group - "Dang' it, why can't I just swing easy. I can't stop trying to kill the ball."

And Sarah makes a nice and slow swing and hits it right. When I say right, I mean it goes so quickly to the right that it almost hits her Monkey Instructor in his, um .... mid section - before rolling into the trees.

"Sarah, it looked like you swayed and then picked up your head on that one. Next time you might want to ....." "Would you shut up and keep your Monkey comments to yourself" - Sarah interjects.

Sorry about that - I'm sure Sarah wouldn't have used that tone of voice - but I wanted the story to have a happy ending.

Have you ever seen that story above happen in front of your eyes?

Listening to others on the golf course is such a Bad Habit that you should be banished from the golfing world for ever listening to anyone on the golf course. I know we'll never get rid of the Monkey Instructors that are lurking in the shadows like crack dealers waiting to spot Golfers that are frustrated so that they can spew their Monkey advice and look like a hero if you do well. We'll never get rid of them, but we can become Golfers that can see them coming and know how to handle the situation so that you don't have to listen to them every hole.

Who has more Good Habits - a Player or a Monkey?

Who has more Bad Habits - a Player or a Monkey?

Who has more Mediocre Habits - a Player or a Monkey?
Do you want to be a Player? Then do this for yourself -

List 5 Good Habits you have on the golf course

List 5 Bad Habits you have on the golf course

After you have listed them - under each Good Habit write why you think it's a Good Habit and under each Bad Habit write why it's a Bad Habit. Then study your answers and be aware of them on the golf course -- especially the Bad Habits. These Bad Habits should be on the top of your mind before every golf shot so you don't allow them to sneak in.

Or you could just read the rest of this Golf improvement Weekly, delete it and move on to something else. Though, not doing this assignment might be put under the category as being a Bad Habit.

"Please Buy Golf Magazine"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 167 - July 12th, 2006

So I'm sitting around and somehow a Golf Magazine gets thrown in my lap. "What's this?" I say. "It's the August Issue of Golf Magazine - the worlds most widely read golf publication" a friendly voice says. "Well why are you giving it to me?"

"I thought you might like to read it. I mean, everybody reads this magazine. They have loads of tips and the very best Golf Instructors in the world contribute to it. Have you ever read a Golf Magazine?"

"I try to forget about those Monkey Days of my youth!"

"Well there's an article in this magazine that ....

“From Over 100+ To Now In The Mid 80's!!”

Marc,

I went to your GMS location in Sotogrande, Spain in March and had a great time with Jeff. I have gone from scoring anywhere from the mid 90s to over 100+ … to now regularly scoring in the mid 80s and rarely over 90.

My driving is eerily straight and 30-40 yards longer - my friends are amazed!
The concentration on simple thoughts like tempo and hitting the middle of the club - especially in putting - has changed my whole approach to the game. Why do others make it so difficult? I am aiming for another GMS in the autumn, hopefully with my friend Dave this time.

“I Can Make Improvements Each Time I Practice And Play!”

GMS,

I attended the June 7-9 in Colorado, at Green Valley Ranch. I just had two chances to play on the golf course since, but I have to tell you that thanks to James and his teaching, now I know in a very clear and simple way what I need to do to produce my swing. I also know what I need to practice and how to practice.

In just 3 days James changed my approach to golf and has it made it more peaceful and enjoyable. With the confidence I have from the simple concepts (like Pace of Swing) I can make improvements each time I practice and play. Only a truly excellent Instructor like James can teach you that.

So thank you James for being so clear and simple. I’m planning on GMS again next year for sure.

"Excellent Feedback On New Location Continues!"

The feedback on our newest location, Grand Geneva Resort, just 1 hour outside Chicago in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin have been off the charts fantastic! We have had Golfers that have been to other GMS locations that have said this is their new favorite GMS location. And we have had people that have never been to GMS before rave about Grand Geneva. In fact, one quote was: “If you other locations are only half as good as Grand Geneva – sign me up for my return visit to the location of your choosing!”

I believe I wrote about Grand Geneva Resort a few weeks ago detailing the resort and how our Instruction at Grand Geneva, Hayden Lewis, has called this the ultimate GMS location. Well, now the Golfers that are visiting us there are pretty much saying the same thing.

And with just over 60% of all the Golfers that have joined us so far at Grand Geneva being Golfers that are returning to see GMS for at least a second time – that tells you a lot about their faith in GMS and trust in what we’re telling you about our newest location.

Grand Geneva Resort is really that good! I hope to see you there soon.

To Achieve Better Golf Scores:

'Sometimes You Need To Lose So That You Can Learn How To Win'

It seems as though many Golfers get so close to shooting their best score ever, but then we ultimately, out of nowhere, do something to mess ourselves up on the last hole or two. Fortunately, this is a process that doesn’t need to be constantly repeating itself. There is a way to get over the hump so that you don’t “shoot yourself in the foot” on those last couple of holes.

I was speaking to a Golfer the other day on a GMS Instructor For Life Telephone Lesson – this Golfer has worked hard to get his game into the low 90’s. We were talking about what he should be practicing now that he has improved so much and how to advance to the next level. It was a great phone call!

Five minutes into our conversation, as we were speaking about his progress and all the things he has improved in his game – he told me that during his latest round of Golf he actually was even par after 7 holes!

But, out of nowhere – he took an 11 on the par four 8th hole. An 11? ‘Where did that come from?’ Hole 8 was followed by a Double Bogey 6 on the 9th hole.

So it was 7 holes of the best golf of his life … followed by a huge let down.

Now there are two ways we can look at this: is this a positive occurrence or a negative occurrence? I’m going positive all the way. Why?

First – even though the 9 holes ended with one hole being 7 over Par and the next being 2 over Par – that still equals a 45. And for a Golfer that was scoring in the 100’s just a short time ago and has recently worked that number down into the low 90’s (with the help of GMS) – a 45 actually isn’t a bad score. It’s still trending better than this Golfer’s average score.

Second – for a mid-90’s Golfer to be even Par through 7 holes says that the Golfer has the ability to hit some good golf shots. It says that the Golfer knows how to make a Par putt. It shows that the Golfer can manage his/her golf game. It says that the Golfer knows how to play one shot at a time and has been working on his/her PLAN.

Third – ‘sometimes you need to lose so that you can learn how to win’. Just as Dustin Johnson experienced a letdown on the 4th day of the US Open – this Golfer experienced a letdown on the last 2 holes of what could be termed a “breakthrough round of golf”. And as big as a US Open win that it would’ve been for young Dustin – finishing 9 holes at even par or in the high 30’s would’ve been this Golfer’s equivalent of winning the US Open.

As Dustin’s 4th round ended with disappointment – I believe Dustin will become a better, stronger Golfer because of it. He perhaps will have a better understanding of how to handle the pressure next time. And I believe that the GMS Golfer I was speaking to will be able to do the same. Actually, I guarantee the next time he’s even Par after 7 holes that he won’t make an 11 on the 8th!

Breaking through on your very first opportunity to score a Major win (or breaking an important number such as scoring 39 for 9 holes) doesn’t guarantee continued future success. Case in point – Trevor Immelman. A great, great Golfer – but as all the experts were saying how his Masters win would catapult him into being the equal of Tiger Woods – it hasn’t happened. Although, on the other hand – how many times did Mickelson fail before winning his first Major? ‘Sometimes you need to lose so that you can learn how to win.’

So for the Golfers out there that have recently come close to breaking through, but somehow messed-up on the last few holes – think of that experience as a positive. To put yourself into the position to breakthrough shows that you have the ability to play good golf. And the more times you put yourself into that position – the more opportunities you’ll be giving yourself to learn how to handle the anxiety that comes with making a breakthrough.

Now the key to getting yourself back into that position is this: don’t expect to be in that position every time you play. The harder you try to get back into that position – the more you won’t allow yourself to get there. The only reason any of us get into the position of being on the verge of breaking through is because we were more focused on playing one shot at a time; and we weren’t concerned with score. Meaning – you were more focused on your PLAN and not focused on how you needed to make that 10 foot putt for Par.

Hence, you were able to put yourself into a wonderful position to breakthrough. However, if in your next round of golf you think about getting back into that breakthrough position – you’re more likely going to have a disastrous round of golf.

That’s the beauty of golf: the more you’re focused on score … the worse your score will be. The more you’re focused on your PLAN … the better your score will be.

The Monkey is always trying to score their best and most often scores like they always do

The Player is always focused on their PLAN and that often puts them into a position to have a breakthrough round of golf

"That's What Friends Are For"

Excerpted from GIW Issue 166 - June 28th, 2006

Here's the scenario - You're playing the best golf of your life after 4 holes of golf. Then on the 5th hole you hit a Drive that you're not 100% happy with, though it's still in play and you accept it as being OK and it doesn't bother you too much.

But apparently it bothers your golfing buddy enough that you didn't hit it perfect because they look at you and say - "You know, you didn't finish your swing on that shot as well as you have been on the first 4 holes. You really need to follow-through better."

Now if you were a Player, you would just look at your Golfing Buddy, smile and say "Thank you for your advice". And then instantly forget everything they just said to you. Though the Monkey would say - "Really? Is that what you saw? Did it look like I was not going all the way through? Was there anything ....

“I Shot 89 The Other Day. First Time In The 80's!!”

Hi Hayden,

You may remember Ken and I came down to see you in April at Heron Bay. I have been working hard on my chipping (Weight On Front Foot drill) and my putting (5 Iron Drill and Ball Behind Ball Drill).
My driving has been more consistent with the Belly Swing and Modified Belly Swing Drill.

All the practicing paid off!! I shot an 89 the other day. First time in the 80s!!

I have been using the GMS Player Page on the Golf Made Simple website to remember all I learned. This is a great resource.

I want to thank you for your great attitude and keeping it fun every day. I am looking forward to producing some more rounds in the 80's. I hope to be back to see you next spring.

The Buzz with Alex

"Are You Looking For 30 Minutes Or Continued Improvement!"

Are you looking for a 30 minute golf lesson, that'll make you feel good for 30 minutes or are you looking for golf improvement that helps you play great for a lot longer than 30 minutes?

Most golf lessons are like aspirin – you have a bad round of golf, so you seek out the closest Golf Professional and take a 30 minute lesson. It’s quick, it’s cheap and the thought of doing it makes you feel better.

Why does it make you feel better? Because regardless of whether you improve or not …. At least you’re doing something.

But, as so often happens – that headache comes back again the next time you’re on the golf course. So what do you do? Do you go back to take another lesson even though the last one didn’t work?

This is what we call the reactionary style of trying to improve. The issue with this common style of lessons is – Golfers that use this approach rarely see any benefits (except for the feeling of: “at least I’m doing something”). But as far as improvement that will carry over, this approach usually doesn’t help to do much because the effects don’t stick around. It’s usually a grip change, or a swing thought that might produce better results for a few swings --- but unwaveringly it’s back to bad golf shots as soon as the lesson is over. Actually, for most Golfers, it’s back to bad golf shots even before the lesson is over!

Unfortunately, that is how 75% of the golf population tries to improve. And that’s why 75% of the golf population never improves their scores after their first three years of playing golf! Yes, that’s right – just about 75% of Golfers will not improve at all after 3 years of golf – regardless of how many more years they play. Why is this? Because they are continually taking aspirin for their game (looking for quick relief) – as opposed to using a PLAN to improve.

That’s why GMS has been so successful in helping Golfers to play better and enjoy the game so much more. We have a PLAN and we give you that PLAN. Think of it as a system that you use (a system based on your golf game) to improve so that you know the Cause and Effect of your golf swing. Which in simple terms means – you know how to absolutely make corrections and adjustments within 1 or 2 bad golf swings on the golf course.

And what if you have an issue that you can’t figure out? We’re here for you with the IFL Program – GMS’s Instructor For Life! What is the Instructor For Life Program and how does it benefit you?

First – The Player Page on the GMS website has all the Drills, notes and strategies you learned at GMS.

Second – If you have a question about your golf swing -- your answer is only an email away by emailing Instructor For Life for help.

Third – IFL Telephone Lessons. How much is it worth to speak to a GMS Instructor on the telephone about your game? A GMS Instructor is only a telephone call away!

The key is this – besides the 3 day program that you attend, where you’ll see improvement, plus feel a lot better about knowing how to improve and play better … you also have Instructor For Life backing you up just in case.

Now, how much more is that worth compared to the 30 minute lesson you took last week?

For dates and information on our GMS locations – go to our GMS All Locations web page by clicking here or give me a call.
